Clean out that ‘Windows10Upgrade’ folder

I recently tried a manual 1607 (AU) upgrade of my desktop but it would get part way along and fail with a vague reason. Coincidentally, my tablet decided to automatically update the same day. That was successful.

I recently discovered the Windows10Upgrade folder but it was on my USB backup drive. I don’t use Windows backup system. It’s 2.88 GB
The folder has not emptied after 10 days but perhaps because the update failed. Its shown no sign of being offered yet.

I’m still on 1511 but somewhere along the way I picked up a Windows.old directory and have found that it’s impossible to get rid of. Windows cleanup won’t remove it and it cannot be deleted – keeps saying it needs SYSTEM permissions.

Fred, I found a third scenario. Sometime shortly before updating from 1511 to AU I had removed windows.old. I manually upgraded to AU now I have neither windows.old nor windows10upgrade folders. Even after 6 weeks and many automatic updates neither has appeared. I did notice a few lines in the setuperr.log but none of them seem to relate.

If you don’t have them, there’s nothing to delete.

I did the cumulative update to 1607, 14393.321 yesterday and thought I’d check to see how much space old Windows Update files were using.
I certainly did not expect 3.99TB :confused:45746-dcu-for-c
