        1. A
        2. B
        3. C
        4. D
        5. E

Suppose I cut A and put it after D

        It looks like this

        1. B
        2. C
        3. D
        4. A
        5. E

Why does Word insist on putting that line space between the A and E.  How can I stop that from happening everytime I cut and paste in a numbered list?

When I cut the A and then insert it before the E using Office 2019 Word, it does not add in a blank line.  I think the tricks are (1) be sure to copy the paragraph mark* following the “A” and (2) insert by placing your cursor in front of the E and not at the end of D.

*If you have hidden the paragraph marks, then be sure to include the space after the A when copying A.
