After I installed Windows 10 2004, when I run the windows defragement, it will show the date & time it was run. If I close it & reopen defragement it shows as never run.

        Thank You,
        John Maderer

This is a known bug in Win10 v2004. If may get fixed eventually.

It is fixed in the most current Insider build. Not sure which build initially contained the fix. I don’t pay much attention to it. I just let Windows take care of it.

Is this bug just “cosmetic” or does it actually affect the defragmentation process?

Not sure about that? I’ve seen somewhere recently that if you have Scheduled optimization turned on (which is the default, of course) Windows will keep optimizing (for SSD’s) or defragmenting (for ‘spinner’ drives) over and over something like every 10 minutes because Windows ‘forgets’ that it has been run and keeps re-running it (which could obviously result in more ‘wear and tear’ for your drives).

Don’t know if that’s true because, like most things that want to ‘look after themselves’ in Windows these days, I always have Scheduled optimization turned off and just run it manually once a week or so.

        have Scheduled optimization turned on

Look in Task Scheduler, Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > Defrag.
You will find when it last ran.

        cheers, Paul

          Thanks, Paul. Here it is:

          defrag

lol… I don’t think it was THAT long ago!

Windows 10 Professional 2004 64bit, clean install at the end of May, one of the first things I did when setting it up was disable the Scheduled optimization but I have run it manually at least once a week since (2 Samsung SSD’s) but, of course, it always “forgets” it has been run a short time after running it.

I would re-enable that task – Windows is pretty good at maintenance.

        cheers, Paul
