On the 26-03-2023 I noticed a Windows 11 Notification about PaintShop Pro – which I dismissed.
Today I see that in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, a copy of Corel PaintShop Pro was installed on 26/03
Also installed today are Snipping Tool, Skype, Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime, Get Help and Feedback Hub. (I presume these are all updates).
None of the above appear in Settings > Windows Updates.

Who is in charge of my PC? Microsoft or Me?

Microsoft has multiple attack surfaces when it comes to updates.
The System (OS) is updated through Windows Update.
The Microsoft Store Apps (Snipping Tool, Skype, Microsoft Edge Webview2 Runtime, Get Help and Feedback Hub, etc) are updated through the Store. This is controled through the Store App. Open the App and under your profile, there is the choice/setting to update or not.
Now get out the Registry Editor, Group Policy and third-party blockers,
Edge does it’s own thing, Edge settings, Registry and Group Policy settings.
      Same with Microsoft Defender.
And then there is the taskbar – you never know when they change that until you notice the change.
And lastly … there are now “Moments.” Still unknown machinations.

You just think you have control! 🙂

Some of W10 WaaS can be controlled in Pro >, that’s what GPedit if for as well as admx update files. Clever third party stuff scratches the annoying surface for a while, until the next monthly CU, then MSFT kindly provides the ‘one microsoft way’ which may or may not undo some ‘irregular to redmond’ changes.
If that doesn’t happen, MSFT Defender is their safety net, it’ll catch some changes stating that a certain file is a deliberate ‘false positive’ to prevent unnacceptable? (to MSFT) changes..pah!
3rd party Firewalls are a godsend when dealing with this type of petulant behaviour.

Any examples where Defender false positives appeared deliberate?

What did it say? Who was it from?

Today I see that in Settings > Apps > Installed Apps, a copy of Corel PaintShop Pro was installed on 26/03

      That wasn’t installed by Microsoft.

Did you have an earlier version of Corel PaintShop Pro installed on your computer?

No, it’s not an App that I have ever needed – so cannot say with any degree of certainty.

As I recall it’s a paid for App and I’ve never paid or used a hacked copy.

Microsoft is in charge of your PC. MS has taken control and there is very little you can do unless you disconnect from Internet. Or switch to old unsupported OS like Windows 7. Or give up on MS and switch to Linux OS.
