It seems Susan may not be accepting DMs any more. so I will suggest this here.

        Hello Susan

I would offer a suggestion regarding the ‘new’ policy. I am thinking that much of the ‘political’ problem is caused by trolls following search engine results. Perhaps ‘Rants’ and maybe ‘Fun Stuff’ could be made opaque to SE robots. That would allow a bit more tolerance in moderation and still make this site seem friendly and inviting.
        Regards,
        David

        I’m still receiving direct messages.  It’s @sb

I’ll investigate.  I just think that due to the issues and the pandemic our tolerance is very thin these days.

Susan, Nerves are being stressed, for many, if not for all of us, by the current unusual situation that forces people to live in an unnatural manner for humans to coexist. The task of moderators is, among other things, to keep irrational postings out of this site, and to leave in place reasonable and serious comments, with supporting references from reliable sources, presented in a circumspect and respectful manner, on issues of substance that affect all our lives, covids-19 or not, whether these comments are entirely correct or not (others can always follow on with their own comments arguing why they are not right and proposing corrections).

While being self-isolated, wearing a mask when out of my apartment, etc. does not seem to bother me, at least that I’ve noticed, I am instead very worried about the recommendation that people should report “political” comments, that I fear is opening the way for a sort of political vigilantism that, I suspect, can be very detrimental to the quality of this site, possibly a case of the medicine being worse than the disease, so to speak. These are not going to be robots or outside trolls, but people affiliated with AskWoody that see as their obligation, and their right, to help stop whatever they consider “political” and therefore “inappropriate,” even when it is not rubbed in their faces or pushed down their throats.

I would go as far as to say that, as long as it conforms to what is appropriate civil behavior as this is commonly understood, it is no one else’s business (other than yours and the moderators’) what people here choose to discuss among themselves: if one does not care for the subject of a particular thread created in an appropriate forum, then one should ignore it and move on to deal with things of one’s own interest elsewhere.

I am not asking to “report” political comments, rather to not make them in the first place.  This is a request to self-police ourselves, not to police others.

It’s up to us the moderators to make that call.  https://www.wsj.com/articles/BL-LB-4558 I’m reminded by the “I’ll know it when I see it” quote from the Judge in regards to porn. We’ll know it, it’s not up to you to know it.

I’ll give you an example of how the Internet is encouraging rude behavior. Recently I tried out a different platform to “advertise” the site.  The site is one that many here refuse to frequent but I wanted to try it out as another venue to obtain new subscribers.  I set up one sponsored post as a test to see what would happen. I received as comments some of the most rude, crass, inappropriate images, etc. that I have personally received.  This is a platform that is free to the users and makes its money via advertising. Yet the respondents were incensed that I had spammed their page.  Uh, dear, unless you are playing for that platform, it’s not your page and you are the product.

The Internet, the pandemic, the political discourse, all of it has turned social media into a cancer on our society.  And that’s a real shame.  It used to be a nice way to share pictures with friends and family. Now it’s a place of incivility.  My goal is to nip that in the bud.

Susan, I am not questioning your intention, but I am expressing a concern for something I have seen early signs of happening, because of how some people has chosen to interpret your recommendation. (I have explained this to you, separately, already.)

I am not sure how this can be stopped, even at this very early stage, but it  is worthy of close monitoring.

As to the either misguided or malintentioned misuse of modern means of communication being like a cancer to the body politic, I entirely agree while also pointing out that this is by no means a new phenomenon: it started centuries ago with tendentious and libelous pamfleteering and was boosted enormously with the advent of radio.

I have not seen people “report” – as in hit the report button on the site – something is political.  So far I’ve seen them give an opinion.  I think perhaps we need to be reminded that Brian’s posts are on consumer advocacy and thus might be seen by some has having political nuances.

Hearst.  Yellow Journalism.  Nothing is new.  It’s all in history if you just paid attention in school.

Susan, Quite so. I completely agree.

As to what is being “reported,” I have no way to know what people might be “reporting” to moderators by clicking that button. My concern is about something else: what seems to be the beginning of what might be called “drive-by graffiti attacks”, consisting in each case of a very short and unfounded statement where the qualificative of  “political” is planted as an accusation by someone that obviously has not bother to read what people have been actually writing about, but just because of a “gut feeling” this might be “political.” Until now and for the three plus years I have been visiting this site, I must confess that I have not noticed any worrisome signs of things trending here to the deplorable situation in the so-called “social” media. But I am starting to worry now. I really hope the future proves me wrong.

        Susan,

I just tried to DM you at “@sb” (by copy/paste, so no typo errors), but got an “invalid recipient” error. – just so you know.

My message was titled “”Sticky” in “Questions Win 10″ Subforum,” and is as follows

        Susan,

?Did you intend for the topmost message (“Amazon – Win10”) in this subforum to be pinned??

I’ve discussed before with Woody (who seemed to agree) and Kirsty (who was too busy at the time) that it’s confusing to allow new posts in the overall Windows 10 Forum, when there’s already a subforum (as above) titled “Questions Win 10.” Even if it would be too time consuming to integrate the ~215 topics into the subforum, at least block new topics from being posted, so that they will go to the appropriate subforum. Happy to discuss this further (if and) when you have the time.

        Zig

That was not intentional and it’s unstuck now. Thanks for noticing!

Zig: Is always without the @; if it is a name with two or more words, running the words together (in all low-case characters) may work. Sometimes the word order is reversed though. If you find a comment posted by someone you want to get in touch with, clicking on the assumed name gets you to that person’s profile and there is the user name, starting with the @ that one should ignore. It might take a few trials to get it right, but it is far from an impossible thing to do.
