I don’t remember CueCat. I’m fairly certain it was almost unknown this side of the pond, even though we had Radio Shack stores in the UK (one of my favourite haunts from my teens until they all closed down).

However, the Cory Doctorow article was *very* interesting – not only for the companies that *were* mentioned but, IMO, the one biggie that wasn’t mentioned at all… Microsoft, and its paradigm shift of attitude to end-users ‘tweaking’ the Windows OS for their own benefit.

What used to be accepted many years ago, even encouraged and documented (by the likes of Raymond Chen), has moved almost completely in the opposite direction to more and more restrictions, obfuscation and removal of huge swathes of technical information.
