A couple of days ago, I decided to reboot to side B of my dual boot desktop PC to get Windows 11 Pro fully updated over there.  I clicked on Restart, and the OS went into the “Installing updates” mode.  So instead of going to the B side after the restart, I booted back into the A side to see what was updated.

But I couldn’t find anything in Windows Update, no new KB.  I poked around a bit, then went on over the the B side to do what I had intended to do in the first  place.  Last night I think I stumbled upon the mystery update, likely a “dribble”.  I clicked on “All Programs” and slid up to “Apps”, and the flyout menu had “Microsoft Defender” highlighted.

I opened Microsoft Defender to this new interface, and the options to protect other devices and to protect my identity.  My Android phone is eligible, so I’ve set it up—that requires a Microsoft 365 account, which I have.  I’m guessing that this is a dribble, relocating Microsoft Defender, which is of no real consequence since when I want to access Microsoft Defender I open it from the Taskbar Tray.

Do you have this file: defenderbootstrapper.exe?

This information was reported in another thread and I wonder if there’s a connection between your dribble and an unidentified file that shows in  Microsoft Shared folder.

What’s the difference between Microsoft Defender and … Windows Security … ?

Microsoft Defender is a security app that helps people and families stay safer online with malware protection, web protection, real-time security notifications, and security tips. Microsoft Defender is included in a Microsoft 365 Family or Personal subscription and works on your phone (Android or iOS), PC, and Mac.

Windows Security, formerly known as Windows Defender Security Center, is an app built into Windows 10 or 11 that helps keep your PC more secure. It includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, an antivirus tool that helps protect you against viruses, ransomware, and other malware.

      Getting started with Microsoft Defender

Starting in late February of 2023, the Microsoft Defender app will be included in the Microsoft 365 installer for customers with active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscriptions. That means that when you install the Microsoft 365 apps on your Windows device, the Microsoft Defender app will automatically be installed for you along with the other apps.

If you have an active Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription and have already installed the Microsoft 365 apps, then the Microsoft Defender app will be automatically installed for you with the next update.

        What’s the …

I’ve been very well versed in the AV/AM software which began as “Security Essentials” back when I was running Windows XP.  I was running it before Microsoft bought the software company that produced it.  I’ve kept apace quite well, thank you, and I trust what is now rebranded “Microsoft Defender” in conjunction with Malwarebytes Premium as my sole protection against AV/AM.

After rebranding Windows Defender as Microsoft Defender in early 2019, Microsoft is renaming and bringing more products under the Defender brand, the company announced today [September 22, 2020] at its yearly Ignite developer conference.”

I’ve had Office 365 for a few years, which became rebranded as Microsoft 365 in October, 2022. “Microsoft Defender” was not listed in Apps until a couple of days ago, an upgrade through the Microsoft Store that required a reboot to complete; it was queued and ready.

By the way, the routine upkeep of “Microsoft Defender” taken care of in Task Scheduler is still under “Microsoft\Windows\Windows Defender”.

        Windows-Defender

I added a couple of tasks there a few years ago.  They still run successfully.
