• Edge browser – ad quality concern

    Hello, IT community.

Is it only me, or do other Edge users experience see fraud ads too?
I consider myself as a very carefull user (as an IT admin I am used to behave very safely), but for me I see lot of localised ads that are clearly fraud trying to trick people!

Not only in Edge, but also on youtube, often scam ads are displayed! I do not use facebook but I believe there these scams too.

How is possible that such global companies do not carry their responsibility for protecting people? I mean in Edge, we see “how secure and awesome the browser is”, but in reality, you open new tab and there are many ads, that offer 1000 EUR per one day (if you invest 100 EUR which is clearly scam), guaranteed way to lose weight (if you order for 100 EUR medication) and other EASILY RECOGNISABLE scams.

How is this possible to say I am safe and show scams at the same time? Is there any certification to the advertisers? If not, why? And why those companies (Meta, Microsoft, Aplhabet) are not being FINED for not protecting users, although they proclaim how safe they are? Is it possible to get refund if user clicks this scam?

I don’t see any ads. I use uBlock Origin

Yes, block it is maybe the best possibility. Also DuckDuckGo essentials can improve user experience while surfimg the web.

Without an ad-blocking extension, your browser doesn’t determine what adverts you see, your browser just displays whatever the website you visit tells you to, so every browser will (in theory) display the same thing.

Rather, the website owner chooses an ad provider (usually Google), who in turn chooses the ads, but, like any other company, ad providers like Google couldn’t care less if you get scammed, as long as they make a profit.

No regulator is going to clamp down on this because companies like Google are more powerful than countries.

The best thing you can do, as Alex eluded to, is to use uBlock Origin and block ads. Google are pushing changes in Chromium (which Chrome and Edge are based on) to stop ad-blockers from working, but they still work for now, and they always will on non-Chromium browsers like Firefox.

I am system admin, I install lot of new computers, that are delivered to users then. And I see those scam ads right away after fresh installation and opening Edge fro the first time.. At the moment, that the environment should be as clear as possible.

You are correct, as they make profit, they do not care (companies).

And thats the biggest letdown for me. Because this is happening silently, while their PR agencies only talk about how great and secure they are. In fact they participate on these scams, because they show you the fraud ad.

        1) Stop showing ads right away the user turns his computer on (this is the REAL PROBLEM). It should be their social duty to protect users from this.

        2) Make advertisers go through some checking, or certification. You can charge more for showing their ads then, because it would reduce number of subjects on the market.

I agree, that uBlock is the best way. Unfortunatelly they will disable these tools soon, which is sad, because it will increase the number of ads displayed, thus increasing the income for these gigantic companies and increasing ammount of money scammers will make.

Lots of work ahead but try using Sysinternals TCPView or Nirsoft’s CurrPorts or TcpLogView to see which connections are active when starting edge and use the firewall to squelch any weird looking domains that might be serving ads.

            Disable bing chat.

            1. Open Settings on Windows.
            2. Click on Privacy & security.
            3. Under the “Windows permissions” section, click the “Search permissions” setting.
            4. Under the “More settings” section, turn off the “Show Search highlights” toggle switch to disable Bing Chat AI.
            5. Alternatively, you can select the “Settings” option in the pop-up menu, select “Sidebar” from the list in the left pane, click the “Discover” button under “App specific settings” in the “App and notification settings” section, and toggle off the “Show Discover” option to disable the Bing Chat button.

Thank you for sharing this how-to. I appreciate.

And why is this default ON? Also, I don not uderstand, why Bing AI should be bundled to “show ad” functions? Ads, that are clearly fraud.

Attachment = hooray! Small victory for me, sometimes even Google must admit I am correct and removed scam ad I reported. Im doing this (reporting ads) on daily basis in believe that world will become a better place.

Because Windows is no longer an operating system whose purpose and design philosophy is to make it easy for the user to carry out tasks.

Windows is now designed as a platform to sell you additional Microsoft products (via Microsoft adverts) and to sell you (via third-party adverts) and your data (via AI) as a product. This is why there are adverts and adware throughout the system and why Microsoft has changed its terms to allow it to use your data (Max Stul Oppenheimer had a good article about this in the 20.35 newsletter – available for free).

(Good job for getting that advert taken down, by the way).
