• Expanding Task Bar Buttons

Lately, I’m experiencing a change in the format of taskbar buttons. I believe this may have started after updating with the December 2020 Cumulative Update. Previously, the button size remained unchanged and a highlight line was placed below it when opened. Now, when I start an app by clicking the button and open a file within it, the button expands and displays a text with the file name that was opened. What’s up with that? I do NOT like this new “feature.” Is there a way to stop this behavior?

    Thanks!

Right click on the taskbar – choose “Taskbar Settings”
Turn off “Use peek” and Show badges”
      See if that fixes it.

You should go through the Settings App and make the settings the same as they were on the Surface 4. Put the two computers side by side. Check all the choices of settings. You will need some FREE TIME – it’s going to take a while. (But leave Windows Update alons)

I had already turned off both of those settings before posting here, so that’s not it. I created a spreadsheet with all the new Pro 7 settings, which runs to over 150 rows. No such document for the Pro 4. Just re-checked the Pro 4 and found that this same behavior is displayed there, so whatever changed happened before the December CU. So comparing settings won’t work. Any other ideas? This isn’t a serious problem, just an annoyance. When I have several apps open at the same time, all this added text takes up most of the task bar.

How about further down that page under multiple displays (don’t you have a second display?) about “Combine buttons” and “Always hide labels”?

You people are the greatest! Been searching for an answer to this elsewhere for hours. It was the Combine taskbar buttons>Always, hide labels that did the trick.

I would have NEVER guessed that the labels had anything to do with combining buttons.

      Thanks again!
