I am having trouble with time-outs in my AT&T e-mail account, which uses Yahoo as the e-mail provider. Ordinarily, I have the Firefox Multi-Account Containers extension and the U Block Origins extension enabled. But, I have gone into Trouble Shooting Mode to see if I can avoid the timeouts. FF-Trouble-Shooting-Mode-is-ON

Trouble Shooting Mode disables extensions. You can see that they are disabled. FF-Extensions-are-disabled-due-to-T-S-Mode

However, even with extensions disabled, the Multi-Account Containers extension is still working. Multi-Account-Containers-is-working

How can this be? I want to have all of the extensions disabled to see if the AT&T time outs stop.

Do you see the setting (in Settings under Tabs) which says “Enable Container Tabs”, is it colored gray to denote that it is blocked from being altered?

Yes, as you see in the screenshot “FF-Extensions-are-disabled-due-to-T-S-Mode.jpg”, the extension is greyed out. That’s why I am asking … if the extension is greyed out, why is it still working?

Anonymous at #2454478 has the answer. Indeed, those two about:config preferences are ‘true,’ even when FF’s Trouble Shooting Mode is ON.

P.S. TG, ‘Anonymous’ posts are still allowed!!

…However, even with extensions disabled, the Multi-Account Containers extension is still working. …How can this be? …

It could be that the Multi-Account Containers extension interfaces with FF in a way that prevents troubleshooting mode from disabling it, plain and simple. So, the only way to fully disable it might be to uninstall it. Since I don’t use that extension I can’t say for sure, I can only hazard a guess.

I’ve had no privacy issues with just using the features that are built into FF, and can get to the vast majority of sites with no issues with sites’ functionality being broken. For the very few stubborn ones, I have a portable FF installation that seems to work just fine with a few privacy settings backed off just a bit.

I’ve got a feeling that your timeout issues are the result of a site or advertiser that’s trying to set a cookie or place a beacon on the page, and when that doesn’t work (because of one of your privacy settings) you get unceremoniously logged out of the site. Yahoo has been famous for that kind of behavior in the past (surreptitiously placing “invisible” beacons or trackers on a page so small you can’t see them because they’re only 1 pixel by 1 pixel in size), so I’ve never used any of their services or gone to their site for any reason for that matter.

E-mail messages regularly use the same 1 pixel x 1 pixel trick to track you!

Exactly why T’Bird blocks all remote content in emails by default! Also, Google blocks them in GMail if you log into a GMail account with a browser.

Or at least that’s why I thought that they blocked remote content by default! 🤔

Container tabs are built-in to Firefox. You can enable them without the Multi-Account Containers extension, but the extension makes them easier to manage and adds some features.

When you disable the extension, it does not remove the container tabs that you created.

If the values for the following preferences in about:config are set to true, container tabs are enabled.

      privacy.userContext.enabled
      privacy.userContext.ui.enabled
