Microsoft’s support of Windows 7 is over, but its life doesn’t have to end. We call on Microsoft to upcycle it instead.

On January 14th, Windows 7 reached its official “end-of-life,” bringing an end to its updates as well as its ten years of poisoning education, invading privacy, and threatening user security. The end of Windows 7’s lifecycle gives Microsoft the perfect opportunity to undo past wrongs, and to upcycle it instead.

We call on them to release it as free software, and give it to the community to study and improve. As there is already a precedent for releasing some core Windows utilities as free software, Microsoft has nothing to lose by liberating a version of their operating system that they themselves say has “reached its end.”

      To the executives at Microsoft:

We demand that Windows 7 be released as free software. Its life doesn’t have to end. Give it to the community to study, modify, and share.
We urge you to respect the freedom and privacy of your users – not simply strongarm them into the newest Windows version.
We want more proof that you really respect users and user freedom, and aren’t just using those concepts as marketing when convenient…

      We demand …

That’s a great way to start off when there’s no legal or moral obligation whatsoever. 🙄

Btw, this is a horrible idea – there’d be no way to keep that mess of spaghetti away from the people who would find all of its vulnerabilities much faster than they could be patched.

It seems it depends on who is demanding. China’s communist party got Windows source code of the ‘Chinese-made-to-order’ Windows 10.

A potential paying customer can make whatever requests they like, especially if dangling billions of Yuan.

The ability to upgrade Windows 7 directly to Windows 10 means that the two versions share a lot of code.  Making Windows 7 open-source would reveal a lot of Windows 10’s innards.  Not likely to happen.

Create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates, in case you need to start over!

If the Chinese party has the code of Windows 10 ( #2109931) why not the rest of us?

Sorry for this skeptical reply: Besides the serious practical problems already mentioned here with having an open source version of Windows 7, there is also the question of where are the developers of such a version going to come from. I somewhat doubt Linux developers will be inclined to have so much to do with any kind of Windows — as opposed to making some popular Windows applications available in Linux, which they have done and, very likely, will continue to do. If not them, who else may there be willing to take up the difficult job of taking care of something so complex, with a gradually and most likely steadily shrinking market?

Windows 10 itself is still built on longhorn kernel

i wonder why WinXP did not get such request 🙂
