According to the BBC, “Germany’s cyber-security authority has warned against using anti-virus software from Russian headquartered company Kaspersky.”

In recognition of current global events, should we stop using, boycott, and/or stop supporting Kaspersky software?

This link (#post-2431983 ) you are giving is not correct. That link is about the very first recent formal governemental warning of Germany’s BID about using software in these stressfull times (in German and English). After that many newsagents picked this news up.

When claims or statements are made it is good to give some links  for  some referring “literature” or fackt-check review. There are too many hoax stories to wander around.

At the core of this thread are three issues:

      • Is it safe to use the Russian owned Kaspersky Cyber Security Solutions?
      • Should the free world do business with Russian owned and Moscow headquartered businesses such as Kaspersky (Kaspersky HQ, 39A/3 Leningradskoe Shosse, Moscow, 125212, Russian Federation)?
      • Should computer users in North America and Europe do business with firms that sell Russian products including Kaspersky software such as Amazon and newegg or favor those that do not including Micro Center, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target.

      Yes, yes, and no.

It is too late for many, by now, for it to be a practical option to prescind completely of Amazon’s services. So the last point requires a different approach than completely ignoring Amazon. Perhaps this is something governments should look into and do something about.

wavy: “Despite the good ratings it gets I have made it a policy to avoid ru anything for years.

That is so much like my own idea, it needs to be challenged on the grounds of violation of copyright.

According to BLEEPINGCOMPUTER, HackerOne has kicked Kaspersky’s bug bounty program off its platform.

      https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/hackerone-kicks-kaspersky-s-bug-bounty-program-off-its-platform/

The action follows the German Federal Office for Information Security’s (BSI) warning against using Kaspersky anti-malware products due to Russian threats against the EU, NATO, and Germany earlier this month.

In addition, since September 2019, all US government agencies and their contractors have been prohibited from using cybersecurity products provided by or using software made by Kaspersky.

The US ban on agencies and their vendors/contractors is comprehensive and covers the, “contracting for hardware, software and services developed or provided by Kaspersky Lab or its related entities, or using any such hardware, software or services in the development of data or deliverables first produced in the performance of the contract”.

      https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/06/15/2018-12847/federal-acquisition-regulation-use-of-products-and-services-of-kaspersky-lab

In short, if you do work for the US federal government you are restricted from using Kaspersky products on any IT system that directly or indirectly touches government work.  So, the way we see it, if one of your employees uses a Kaspersky product on their personal computer and uses the computer to check their office email you are in violation of the federal ban.

Or if you maintain computers for a firm that does work for the federal government you are also prohibited from using Kaspersky products on any device that may interface with your client’s hardware or software.

ZDNet’s February 25, 2002 article How Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatens the IT industry by Jason Perlow is an interesting summary of the interrelationship between a number of software companies and Russia.
