Is there a preference in about:config that will make Firefox always open in a new tab when you click on a link, rather than replacing the open tab?

Right now, sometimes I get a new tab for the link and sometimes the link opens in the current tab.

There is an extension that does this.
      Open Link with New Tab

      Been using it or years.

Give us the name of the extension then!

        Code is no help.

I use programs more than 10 years old but I always put them out to be downloaded and used.

I just right click the link and get a pop-up menu with “Open in new tab” as the top choice.

      This removes any guesswork.

You can also click the mouse scroll wheel to achieve the same result in a single click.

I want to avoid having to open the context menu. I’ve been doing that, but I’m looking for something that’s less tedious. I’ll try the post from @Phil F to ‘click the scroll wheel’ and see if that suits my navigation stragegy. (I can’t get the ‘F’ to appear in blue font here.)

If, later, I find that I want a new tab every time, I’ll try the about:config settings in the post from @Alejr (This doesn’t appear in blue font. Why?)

This doesn’t appear in blue font. Why?

The blue color you see when you enter @ before a user’s name is actual a link to their AskWoody profile.

The reason it doesn’t always appear in blue (i.e. as a link) is because a user’s “Display Name” isn’t necessarily the same as their “Username” which is used for the link to their profile.

This can happen because a “Usernamecannot contain blank spaces but a “Display Name” can (i.e. Phil F’s Username is actually @philaf.)

In my case, I didn’t realize the Username I chose when I registered, @bigal67, would be the link to my profile.

I “assumed” it’d only be used to login to AskWoody and my profile would use my “Display Name” (and it’s not possible to change your Username once you’ve registered.)

Just hold the control-key down before you click on the link with the mouse to open the link in a new tab. Works the same way in Chrome.

To “force” Firefox to open links in a new tab.

Set these 4 items to true.

      browser.newtabpage.enabled
      browser.search.openintab
      browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs
      browser.urlbar.openintab

      Set browser.link.open_newwindow to 3

      set browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction to 0

      Restart Firefox
