If you are a user of Edge, but not necessarily of Bing, nor a fan of the menu bar on the right side, be aware that you can now disable these in the GU

Susan, I suspect that you meant to type “getting rid of” the Bing icon, rather than “getting right of.”  🙂

      Hi Susan (and AskWoody users),

When I open Edge’s Settings page and go to “Sidebar” there is no sign of “Discover” and no option to toggle “Show Discover” on or off. Under “App and notification settings” I only have an option to “Allow side bar apps to view notifications” that can be toggled on or off. Am I looking in the wrong place or does anyone have an idea what might be causing the “Show Discover” option not to be visible?

Searching for Discover in the search settings field only comes up with the above option to “Allow side bar apps to view notifications” and a few other unrelated options.

FYI, I’m on a new machine that came preinstalled with Windows 11 Pro 22H2 (yuck!) updated with March patches and Edge is currently on version 112.0.1722.58 and reports no available updates.

My guess is that you had already disabled Discover via group policy or registry, as the Show Discover in Settings only became available within the last month:

Disable Bing / Sidebar using GPO

Check by entering edge://policy in the address bar.

Thanks b, I don’t remember disabling Discover using group policy or registry. When I enter edge://policy in the address bar no policies have been set up at all apparently. Well, I’m not using Edge as my default browser, so for the time being I’ll have to let the bing icon show up.

I don’t use Edge all that often, but I decided to open it and follow Susan’s instructions to get rid of the Bing icon. When I opened Edge, it was there, over at the top on the right side. Then, I turned off both “Always show sidebar” and “Show Discover.” So, the Bing icon disappeared. I then reversed this to see what would happen. The Bing icon didn’t re-appear, but the sidebar did. ‘Bing’ is still gone, even after closing Edge and opening it again. I am Win10/Pro, 22H2, 19045.2728 (March 14, 2023)

While looking for the “Discover” setting, I found a NEW icon/setting that was not here last month. Does anybody know what edge e-tree is? Only option in it’s ‘manage settings’ tab list a lot of greyed out non-toggle-able settings? No way to toggle off ‘Allowed” settings.

I have no M/Soft account on this PC. One down (discover/Bing), another to go?

Does anybody know what edge e-tree is?

You can earn water points by visiting and completing daily tasks on Microsoft Edge, and energy points by visiting and completing daily tasks on Microsoft Weather. When you’ve reached a total of 10,000 points (water or energy points or combined), a real tree will be planted in Kenya.

Microsoft Edge: The program is currently available in the UK, India, South Africa, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, and Singapore.

Microsoft Weather: The program is currently available in many countries and regions. It is not available in mainland China at this time.

      Oh Goody!
I’m anxiously looking forward to learn from it. Thanks in advance.

Good to know another way of getting to that.  Like Berserker, I didn’t find that setting in the way suggested here. However, it’s worth noting that current editions of O&O ShutUp10 do include the ability of turning off the Sidebar their recommended settings, and I know that I’ve turned things off that way.  And when things are disabled via ShutUp10, those all turn up as if they had been done as Group Policy.

Microsoft Edge will soon let you remove some of its unnecessary features

Microsoft is testing a new feature for its browser in the Canary Channel, which will make many users happy. The company wants to let customers disable non-essential parts of Microsoft Edge to make the browser run faster and deliver a less cluttered experience.

The option for toggling on or off different features in Microsoft Edge is rolling out to some users in the Canary Channel as a part of the so-called Controlled Feature Rollout. Those with a lucky ticket can disable optional components by heading to Settings > Optional Features or the edge://settings/optionalFeatures link…
