Not a good year for gmail surely, but I think if you compare it to Microsoft 365 and other competitors it will still look favorable in comparison.

People are only freaked out because of how rare this is.

Yes, this is so true that gmail goes down very very rarely but MS outlook goes down constantly. I wish MS never bought hotmail in 1997, which went down rarely as well. After MS bought, it went down hill from there and converted to Outlook.

Part of this may be due to the recent emails Google sent out.

Important policy changes for Google Account storage

in which they state:

If you’re inactive for 2 years (24 months) in Gmail, Drive or Photos, we may delete the content in the product(s) in which you’re inactive.

Everyone is receiving these emails and may find they have old accounts they want to revive or delete.

I may be typical: I have several accounts due to past projects and added more just before two-factor authentification came in – “in case I needed them”. Now I have to track down these old accounts and save the good stuff and nuke the rest.

This won’t be the only reason for Gmail being down but it adds to the problem.

Your accounts are safe for a good while yet  according to the policy change announcement:-

“As this policy goes into effect 1 June 2021, the earliest it would be enforced is 1 June 2023.”

It feels like Gmail and YouTube are still recovering from the mass outage on Monday.

Considering everything related to Google was either down or intermittent, we’re probably lucky Gmail is even moderately usable.

This is now reporting that this gmail outage should now be fixed:

Affected users received a bounce notification with the error “The email account that you tried to reach does not exist” after sending an email to addresses ending in @gmail.com.

Probably unrelated but two days ago Outlook stopped sending for one of my accounts. The ‘cure’ was to delete the offending account. However, setting up using the automated method did not work. I tweaked ports, needed to check outbound mail uses the same credentials as inbound and set TSL/SSL. manually.

The account was not the prime account so, I needed to cancel sending, as well (opening in safe mode does not seem to do this).

Does the pop.gmail.com server have a problem again, since yesterday?

When in Thunderbird I want to check my Gmail mail, I get:

“pop.gmail.com responded: Username and password not accepted”.

Is it me or is it Gmail?

Gmail Webmail works fine with the same username and password as in Thunderbird.

There’s no obvious sign of it being down today. The last report of problems they are showing was last month.

  I found the solution.

6 or so days ago, Google must have demoted Mozilla’s Thunderbird from secure app to less secure app. Or my Gmail setting was changed somehow, I don’t know which.

But anyway, to have the pop.gmail.com accept Thunderbird, an alleged less secure app, I applied the instructions given in

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255#zippy=

Things work well again like they used to up to 8 January.
