Gmail will start spam-proofing political fundraising emails this week

Gmail users could start seeing more campaign fundraising emails hitting their inboxes over the next couple days as Google starts rolling out a new political filtering system.

Google told Axios on Monday that it was launching a controversial new pilot program to keep campaign emails out of spam folders this week. The program was announced back in June and allows candidates, political party committees, and leadership political action committees to apply for spam folder exemptions.

In August, the Federal Election Commission narrowly voted to approve the program after Google asked for the agency to sign off on it earlier this year…

Spam is spam no matter how you slice it. And these political people are the ones to whom we have been pleading for relief from robocalls, email spam, postal political mail trash, etc. Then they become major offenders. I have my email app set up to direct their “unwanted” into my email junk folder, and I want it to stay that way. Of course, the Federal agencies don’t ask for my input. Anyone surprised? (Sorry for the rant, but I think this time it is justified.)

Starting today in the US, we’ll be trialing mandatory verification for accounts belonging to governments, politicians, and political parties through the midterm elections…

This means accounts belonging to politicians and political parties will automatically have their access to advertising features turned off..

we will be prohibiting these accounts from accessing other monetization features. Specifically, they will not have access to features like gifting, tipping, and e-commerce, and will be ineligible for our Creator Fund.
