• Google’s OBSESSIVE checks for updates

You who use Google as your search engine, your eMail provider, or many, many other things – do you realise that Google Update “phones home” for updates every hour?

This seems like truly Obsessive Compulsive Disorder on behalf of Google. If a human being behaved like this, he would be certified insane, quite deservedly. Is it really necessary? Google, if you are reading this forum, please get real, once a week is quite often enough. I have used Task Scheduler to disable all Google Update behaviour – it’s not difficult – and I recommend everyone else to do the same. I’ll decide when to check for updates to Google products, and will not submit to having Google decide this for me, without giving me the option.

You have software on your PC connecting for updates? I don’t think using purely the online services would install any software on your PC. Maybe it’s Google Chrome, Google Earth, some toolbar, or something else you installed locally.

Edit: As for the timing, if it’s for Google Chrome and you use it as your primary browser, I think frequent update checks are a good idea.

It’s easy to stop. Just delete it from your scheduled tasks.

JScher – as I said, I prefer to choose my own timing to take Google updates, rather than having it determined for me, obsessively, by Google. Secunia scans do quite a good enough job of informing me when Google Chrome has an update available. I rest my case.

      Case re-opened.

If you have issues with Google products on your PC why don’t you simply uninstall them?
