Years ago I used Hirens Boot CD, though at the time it was a bit dodgy being mostly DOS apps and not all of them legally distributed.

I understand that has changed now and I was thinking of taking a look at it. Went to the site, but it seems to be a morass of ads for everything else, and nowhere can I find a simple download link. So I tried a couple of 3rd party download sites from Google search and that was even worse.

Does anyone know what is the story there? Is there a safe place to download the ISO?

    Pleased to hear, thanks.

      Hi CLiNT

      Thanks yr reply.

I have indeed seen that link on that page. However, when you click on the link to the right of filename, which points to: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.14.1.zip

You in fact get looped back to the same page you invoked it from, IE: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/. No download happens.

      Nice tight little loop, that.

If you actually try the download does it start for you?

It’s working for me, as you can see from my snapshot.
I decided to download it. The download link is in the green box to the left there…

      Hi CLiNT

Thanks for the followup. In your last you said “Im using IE9, 64 bit “.

So I shifted to a Windows machine and tried IE9. Sure enough, it worked. Looks like a browser problem. I was using FF 7.0.1 under Ubuntu 11.04.

      Problem solved, thanks.

I successfully downloaded the zip file from the link in the newsletter, extracted the files, and used
one of the suggested programs to burn a CD-R (tried the burning twice with CD-Rs on the same machine).
I ensured that Optical Disk was the first option on the boot menu, but neither CD would boot and I can’t
see any files on the CDs when just viewing them.

I really need the recovery tools that the disc provides, so I hope someone can assist me with that issue.
        Windows XP SP3 OS

        Thanks.

Do you have access to another machine that you could try the disk on ?

Luckily I used the XP Recovery Disc which came with the machine to repair the problems on my boot drive, so I may try to burn the CD from that machine and see if it works.
It looks like a useful collection of tools to use if anything similar happens.

P.S. I DID extract the files from the zip file and used one or more of the suggested programs to burn the ISO file to a CD-R.

You did just burn the iso as an image to CD, right?
You could try a O/S install disk if you have one just to eliminate a bios problem.

I’m glad to see the subject become current again, b/c I just read about this in the recent newsletter. This is a question from an intermediate user! I downloaded the file from the link in the newsletter, to a thumb drive. Will that work? The whole process is a little scary for me, not being a tech expert!

No; you have to extract the ISO file, burn that to a CD, take extra steps to prepare a flash drive, and then copy files from the CD:

Yumi the USB multi boot creator has an option for Hirems also. I am trying it today on a stick I made last year. I admit I have been a bit hesitant to explore Hirems until now.

I was thinking more about checking to see if the disk would boot on another machine to eliminate the disk drive on the machine that it wouldn’t boot on.

I have used Hiren’s CD (and DVD) for years. It can be a lifesaver!

It’s an XP / Linux based boot CD. You can unzip and then burn the ISO file to a CD, or to a thumb-drive (you need some other tools if you want the thumb-drive to be a multi-boot drive, like adding a version of Linux, such as Ubuntu.

You may or may not be able to boot from your thumb-drive, though. It depends on your BIOS and USB controller combination.

Hiren’s can boot to a mini Windows XP desktop, and then you can use its Menu, or its version of Windows Explorer, to explore the tons of tools on the CD, and that can be overwhelming to many people.

The DVD version is even far more overwhelming, an overkill in most situations, and the download is over 2GB (as opposed to the CD version, which is about one fourth the size of the DVD version).

Many, if not all, of the tools on the CD (or DVD) are the portable type, no installation required. Therefore, you can use a utility to open the ISO file, extract the tool(s) you want, and run it without booting from Hiren’s.
These tools and utilities are generally available freely at various web locations, but collecting them individually would be a formidable task.

Here is a direct link to the latest Hiren’s CD (zip file): http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip

Or here, if the above link is rejected by the forum’s SW: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/files/Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip

As always, use common sense, make sure you scan anything and everything you download for viruses, malware, hijackers, etc.[/B]

I agree wholeheartedly with sh10453’s comments.

I downloaded and burnt the latest version of Hirens Boot CD only a couple of weeks ago – it’s come a long way and is now much more user friendly – a very useful tool.

For simplicity, burn it slowly as an ISO and make sure you finalise the CD-r (assuming there is an optical drive in the machine it’s to be used on). Far and away the most foolproof iso burner available is BurnCDCC 2.0.2.0: Free – difficult to go wrong, all it does is burn iso!

Been using Hiren CD since my boss introduced it to me back around 2007 (was repairing PCs then). I don’t believe I have the latest but I did download it a few months back. Did not know there was a DVD version (way out of the loop now; lol). Highly recommend this tool if you are going to be serious about computer repair. 🙂

Looks like everything on the CD is freeware or shareware and I am thinking Hiren’s Boot DVD 15.2 Restored Edition has non freeware ‘restored’. I did not actually visit any of the sites offering it. They seemed a bit questionable though WOT seemed to like most of them.
