I’m not sure of which forum to post this in. If a moderator wishes to move this topic into a more appropriate forum, that’s fine with me.

As a simple user, I use Macrium Reflect Free (MRF) to create a full system image backup by selecting Image this disk each month during the week before Patch Tuesday. I do not leave the external HDD connected for the rest of the month. My MRF is v7.3.5550 and I’m notified I have the latest update when I check it out.

I have an MRF Bootable USB Rescue media from Aug 7, 2020 when the laptop was on 1909.
    — I tested it back then & it worked fine.

Now I am on Version 20H2 (OS Build 19042.804), I was going to create an up-to-date MRF Bootable Rescue media using DVD-RW.
    — I’ve read through the manual but I’m having a difficult time trying to determine what I need to do in an orderly manner.
    — I don’t mind using a USB but I still have 10 DVD-RW discs that I’d like to use when I can.

However, when I go to Other tasks: Create Rescue Media, the top portion of the following screen shows
    Rescue Media Settings
Windows RE: Windows RE 10 Release 1903 (64-bit)
Macrium Reflect: Free Edition (64-bit) v7.2.5107
Status: A later version of Windows RE is available
    Click ‘Build’ to update
When I Click ‘Build’ to update, nothing happens.

Further down in the Select Device section with CD/DVD Burner highlighted, I see
    CD/DVD Rescue Media options
Check for devices missing drivers on boot unchecked.
    — Should I check it even though I don’t suspect I have missing drivers on boot?
    — Prompt for key press to continue boot sequence checked: I am familiar with doing that.
At the bottom there is a Build tab, is that what I should select to do?

Also, in the Select Device section there is Windows Boot Menu, when I highlight that, I see
Add/change the boot menu for the selected Windows PE version
Down in the Boot menu options
    — No boot menu is dotted in.
Add boot menu – Windows RE 10 Release 1903 (64-bit) is dotted in.
    — I don’t remember doing that before but should I see how to work with that?
At the bottom there is a Build tab, is that what I should select to do?

You do not need to update the rescue media as long as it works on your machine – boots, reads the backup media and can see the system disk.
      Take the “do nothing” option.

      cheers, Paul

If you consider the very different read/write speeds between USB and DVD, it’s going to take a considerably longer time to load a PE Rescue environment from a DVD-RW.

Plus, of course, it’s a more fragile medium – one tiny scratch or even a fingerprint could lead to a read error.

I too have many blank DVD-RW disks… and cannot think of when I’ll ever use them these days.

      Hope this helps…

I definitely like both options. They make sense to me.
