Latest Servicing Stack Update for Windows 8.1 KB4504418 doesn’t appear among offered updates after automatic update checks performed by Windows Update on my windows 8.1 PCs.

Should I download latest SSU from Microsoft Update Catalog and install it manually before installing KB4507448 (Security Monthly Quality Rollup) via Windows Update?

Well it’s supposed to happen automatically when using Windows Update.

If it doesn’t and/or updating fails for whatever reason, download and install manually is likely to be the way to go. (Seems that Windows Update isn’t particularly robust in cases of poor connectivity?)

The Servicing Stack update has to be installed exclusively (by itself). It will not show up in the WU Important update queue until/unless there is on other pending update (checked or unchecked) in the queue. There are several ways to achieve this:

+ Hide ALL the pending updates until there are none left in the Important Update queue, then check for updates. The SSU should appear.
+ Hide the pending updates in the Important Update queue you do not want to install and install all the remaining updates. After the reboot, check for updates and the SSU should appear.
+ Download the SSU from the Catalog and install it by itself manually.
