I am still using Word 2007. Why? Because it does more than I ever need to do. (For choice I’d go back to Word 6, it’s age related!) But here’s the problem…

I have been keeping track of blood pressure and medications for several months, a separate .docx file each week. Last night I saved & closed the current file, nothing abnormal. This morning the file was not shown in the Open dialog box. I eventually found it in the Recycle Bin, why it had been trashed I have no idea. I recovered the file, tried to open it. I got “Word experienced an error trying to open this file…” I tried the “Open and Repair” option. Didn’t work. “Recover text” was not listed. I tried Free File Viewer, and converting it with Doxillion, neither worked. So far I’ve achieved nothing. I have a faint recollection of using a Hex dump, but that was a long time ago “when I wore a younger man’s clothes”.

I not concerned about all my carefully laid out formatting, but is there any way of recovering the text?

I’ve had success multiple times with Libre Office and Apache Open Office before.

I too would suggest trying LibreOffice… (but not OpenOffice… it just hasn’t kept up with changes).

I’ve been using LibreOffice for many years now and its handling of Microsoft’s proprietary .DOC and .DOCX formats just keeps improving.

OpenOffice development ended some time ago. I don’t think it will ever recover.

      Hope this helps…

Thank you Kirsty, I’ll get Libre Office with fingers crossed.

Well, I have to say I am impressed! LibreOffice opened the ‘corrupt’ file instantly. Certainly beats using a Hex editor, amazing how far things have progressed in only…oh about 50 year, give or take a few years.

Thank you all for suggesting it.
