The ComputerWorld article linked in the previous post probably already answered your questions, anyway I suspect that you do not see any patches in wushowhide because you have set Windows Update to pause updates until June 11. I can’t test this at my end, since I’m still running 1809 which does not have the “pause updates” feature.
Assuming this is the reason why you don’t see any patches in wushowhide right now, on June 11 when the pause is over you should immediately run wushowhide and see what patches (if any) your system is offered, mark for hiding all the patches you don’t need and let wushowhide do its work (it can take a long time, especially if hiding multiple patches). Be careful not to let too much time pass between the end of the pause and when you run wushowhide or there is the risk that Windows Update might start to download some update automatically.
I generally run wushowhide as a first thing the day new patches are released and hide all the ones I don’t want to get installed until Woody here reports it’s safe to install.

In wushowhide there is an “advanced” tab where “Apply repairs automatically” is selected by default. I don’t know what this does or might do, so I always deselect it before continuing. The window title says “Troubleshoot and help prevent computer problems”, which seems to imply that wushowhide can do more than just show or hide updates.

As Woody wrote in the article linked above:
Step 2c. This step is important, and not at all obvious: Click the link marked Advanced. Then uncheck the box marked “Apply repairs automatically.”
If you don’t untick the checkbox, you do not gain the control of which updates get hidden or shown!

As long as you have Pause set, nothing will show up in wushowhide.
If yu have only pressed Pause 4 times, you can add another 7 days – you are allowed Pause x5 for a total of 35 days.
As soon as you “resume updates,” will begin download/install.
Metered connections may keep it from continuing the download, but it will be on the way as soon as you turn metered OFF.1 user thanked author for this post.

Before you resume updates at the end of this Pause, turn on metered connections.
Then resume updates (you have to at the end of Pause time anyway) and immediately run wushowhide.
See if you can hide the updates while metered connections are on.
You can always unhide whatever is hidden whenever you get ready.

If you have the Pro Edition, you will not need Metered connections b/c you can stop the automatic download with the Group Policy setting of “2”.
But if you have Home Edition, there is no Group Policy. Metered Connections is the only way to try to keep the updates from downloading automatically if you end Pause and want to hide the updates. And even that may not always work.

Thanks so much. I have 10 pro and have not used metered connections.
That is one of the confusing issues by have several versions of Windows. At least the basic functions such as updating should be the same.
Also, thank you for taking the time to update AKB00..16 for v2004 users although I am not planning to update from 1909 in the near future.

You must not have read AKB2000016. It specifically states that whatever you see in the Update queue is what you get. If you hide updates with wushowhide, and they still show in the queue, you have to CLEAR THE QUEUE before you proceed with the download, because “what you see is what you get.” The procedure to clear the queue is linked in AKB2000016.
Before next Patch Tuesday, you should go over the instructions so that won’t happen again.

Today I opened Windows Update and Security in Windows 10 settings to pause updates. There were 55 updates for Microsoft Office 10. I do not have Office 10. I have Office Picture Manager which I got from SharePoint Designer 2010 according to these instructions.

All the updates said “Status: Pending download.”
So, I opened wushowhide, unchecked box under Advanced that said “apply repairs automatically” and scanned with it. All the updates were listed, I checked them all and I hid them all, which took a long time. Then I went to clear the Update queue.

I turned on metered connections. I had already run wushowhide and hid all the updates.
I opened services in Computer Management>Services and Applications>Services. The word “disable” does not appear in any drop-down menu or anywhere else. The best I could do is choose Properties where I could stop the service. I had to change the start up to manual at the same time or when I restarted the computer, Windows Update would turn on again if I left it at automatic.
I restarted the computer.
I had already changed the startup type to manual.
I ran wushowhide and verified that all the updates were still hidden. I ran it again and verified they are not available to be hidden. Nothing was available to be hidden.
I restarted the computer again. Metered connection is still on.
I did my best.
Is there someplace else where services are listed and it is possible to disable windows update? This is what got me confused last month. Then I forgot about it completely.
All the updates are still in Update and Security>Windows Update “Pending download”. Are they going to disappear when Windows eventually updates?

I just went to services again. Windows Update says it is running. Next to manual it shows (Trigger Start). I don’t know what that is. According to the Properties box it is still stopped and it is still manuel start. But in the list of services it shows Manual(Trigger Start).

If the updates show are hidden in wushowhide, wait for WU to check for updates on its own. The updates should be gone from the WU queue.
If the updates still show in Windows Update after WU has checked for updats, try hiding them again. As long as they are showing in Windows Update, they will download/install.

I went through all the steps, this time using disabled. After I restarted, I went to Services and Windows Update is running and it says Manual (Trigger Start).
This time the Properties box shows it is running but is still set for manual.
Is it supposed to be like this?

Do this first – look in Control Panel\ Power options\ under “what the power button does” there should be a check box to turn off Fast Startup. You may have to click on the link to change things first.
Then set the WU Service to disabled.
Stop the service.
Reboot (wait till it’s through booting)
Go to services and change from Disabled to Manual
BUT do not Start the service.
Look in WU and see fi the patches are gone.1 user thanked author for this post.

Just FYI – wushowhide uses the Windows Update Service to search for updates too. After the reboot, Win Upd Service was still stopped when you set it to Manual. But the first time you run wushowhide, or the first time Windows searches for updatesn on its own, the Service is turned back on and operates like normal after that.
To clear the cache/queue, you have to follow that procedure exactly (all the steps). When you do, it works.

That Registry setting represents a Group Policy setting.
Win10 Home does not have Group Policy, so it ignores the setting.

Well this time I followed instructions exactly. I hid two HP updates and the NET update. See figure below.
I then went through the steps to clear the queue and when I went to see if it was clear it was not. See figure below.
So, I went through the procedure again with the same result.
Then I decided maybe this is not wrong. Windows update is just showing what failed to install. If I wait with metered connections on, then eventually it will check for updates and only find the updates I have not hidden.
And when I check the queue if that is all that is there, I can then turn off metered connections and only the updates I want will download and install.
Hope that is right.

Well overnight Windows Update ran and everything was in the queue except the Definition Update for Windows Defender which installed.
I double checked and verified the update(s) I did not want were hidden, and then verified they are not available to be hidden. That was the case last night and it is still so this morning. Yet here they all are in the queue this morning.
I will wait one more time for Windows to update. I know I am completeing each step to clear the queue. I don’t know why it is not working.

Ta Da! It worked. Windows checked for updates and only came up with the one I wanted and the three I did not want are not in the queue.
So I turned off metered connection and let Windows do its thing.

They’re baaaack. These updates are still hidden but showed up in the queue again.
Also couldn’t turn metered connection off to download Microsoft Office 2019 C2R updates or everything would have loaded and installed. Since it is C2R thought I would try with metered on. It stuck on “downloading office updates” for about 10 minutes then said it detected I had a data limit and could it download anyway and even though I clicked yes it stuck on “downloading office updates” again for about 30 minutes. So I ended the task using Task Manager. That somehow woke it up and another box immediately popped up and said to close all aps while office updates are installed which they quickly did and the computer restarted. So I guess C2R can get through a metered connection with permission but got stuck somehow.
I will try to clear the queue again but I am inclined to just turn off metered connection and let it all go. This is not something I wish to do every day. Probably should let the updates from HP load on this HP computer anyway. And I somehow have NET on this computer anyway so might as well let it update.

If you have Group Policy setting Configure Automatic Updates set to 2 – Notify for download and auto install then there is no need for enabling metered connection. It looks like you have that GP setting enabled, since the ‘Download’ button can be seen in your screenshot.
The July .NET Preview update is benign, so you can safely install it without worry if that is how you feel, but I would recommend using wushohide and the AKB2000013 steps again to purge KB4562900 from WU altogether. It is good practice for the future, and once you’ve mastered it, it will be easier to do for future unwanted updates.

I have Windows10 Home v1909 so no Group Policy. I have AKB2000013 mastered all right. It seems that is all I do. The “hidden” updates keep coming back.

Oh, I apologise for that then. Getting my wires crossed again.
But, as Elly says, give Windows Update time and the queue should clear itself of the July .NET Preview. I know the process is a bit tedious; certainly compared to Windows 7, and I’m only just about adjusted to it myself. However, it’s worth it in the end 🙂

You can still hide KB 4562900 with wushowhide, and just don’t click the download button, and eventually it will disappear from your Windows Update queue, just like you did before.
Windows Update will keep sending updates your way… but now you have the tools and knowledge to manage them…
You don’t NEED any more updates (I’d check out the ones from HP, just in case) this month, so you don’t have to rush things by clearing the queue. Eventually Windows Update will check for updates on its own, and any that you’ve hidden will disappear… no stress!
So- use it as practice as @Coldheart9020 says, or hide and ignore it… your choice.

Make sure that you uncheck the advanced option each time you run wushowhide, because it may ‘apply repairs’ automatically, that you didn’t intend.

If you don’t uncheck advanced, then it ‘applies repairs automatically’… and I’m too much of a chicken to find out what that means on my system!
I do use wushowhide any time I have questions about what updates are available, and what updates I have hidden.

Can’t say I blame you 🙂 but I’m sure I remember reading somewhere that if you don’t uncheck the advanced options box (I just do a double tap of space then hit return – it’s slightly quicker) that you don’t get a choice in what updates are shown.
It doesn’t matter either way, as the recommended way is useful to check what’s in the pipeline, and which hidden updates are still lingering.

If updates are hidden and do not appear in the queue one day, why don’t they stay hidden. They are hidden in wushowhide but keep returning to the queue. What is the point if they keep coming back?
I still have the July .NET Preview hidden in wushowhide (and have for almost 3 days), and I have the July .NET CU (the actually important, security update) successfully installed. I let WU do its own unattended search for updates – which seems to be every day and a half or so – and it’s not once being offered to me.
As long as it’s hidden in wushowhide, and as long as you followed the process of clearing the Windows Update queue, it should eventually disappear from the WU window.

The update for Microsoft Visual Studio Tools 2010 is gone but I removed the program so that may be why. Everything else I hid is still there.
Updates for Windows Defender had been in wushowhide since at least 8/1/2020 and do not seem able to get through metered connection. So I turned off metered connection after I was sure those were the only ones pending. Then I clicked check for updates and the Defender updates downloaded and installed. There are no updates now showing to hide.
Then I paused updates until 9/9/2020. That works better for me. I think Defender updates are important and they can get through pause but not metered.
So I won’t know until September if the hidden updates stay hidden because nothing shows in wushowhide when updates are paused.
Still researching the two HP updates and will try to know next month if they are important and I should unhide one or both.
