    I can’t backup Windows 10.  I keep getting this.

A shadow copy could not be created.  Please check VSS and SPP applications event logs for more information.  Details: In sufficient storage available to create either shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.

    Event logs empty.

    Sfc scan good, no errors

    DISM scan good, no errors

Ran optimization on all drives, status OK

Disk management shows plenty of space.

    Disk-Management-2022-04-12-1

Power shell vssadmin list shadows command shows only 3 shadow copies.

Volume Shadow copy (VSS) set to manual in services

Software Protection (SPP) set to Automatic (Delayed Start, Trigger Start)

History:  My printer preferences suddenly stopped including color settings.  I called HP Smart Friend Support and they could not figure it out. Then he used System restore to restore my computer to earliest point available which was about two weeks back.  No change, still no color printer preferences.

So, I went back and of course, I did not get the same guy.  It did not go well.  He did not like it that updates were paused, said they don’t have bugs and I needed to unpause them.  So, all the updates that the restore operation got rid of, loaded again.  He did not seem to get what I was saying.  Was Determined that the “HP Smart” program solves all printer problems so I said show me where HP Smart can open printing preferences on my printer.  He tried. Couldn’t and faded away.  Quick Assist shut down first. Then I think he just hung up on phone.

I ran undo restore point as it had accomplished nothing and I thought it would be a good Idea to go back to where computer was to begin with.  It took about 15-20 minutes to set restore point the first time.  But when I tried to undo it, it froze.  I gave up after about 3 hours and did a hard shut down, holding the start button.  (I know, terrible) I restarted using the restore USB I had created when I installed Windows 10 v 21H1.

Then I went to Microsoft Office 2019 support.  This guy was amazing.  He clicked away and got all my email accounts set up and made tweaks I asked for.  He offered to transfer me to team that works with printers ever though it is an HP printer.

That did not go as smoothly.  First guy said there were some bad files and he needed to do a repair installation where all Windows corrupted system files will be rewritten automatically without making any changes on my personal files or applications.  He also installed 21H2 which I wanted.

The new repaired operating system had a new name – Desktop-LCGPU06.  It also had a very strange file in startup – see Ccleaner and Task Manager start up list.

    Ccleaner-startup-2022-04-12-

    Task-manager-startup-2022-04-12-
I went back, next guy said and he still could not do anything with printer and said it is not an operating  system problem.  Just tell HP tech that the computer set the printer to print color, but the printer is not supplying the ink as expected.  They will know how to fix it.

So here I am with a clean 21H2 operating system and I thought I would back up the system while it was in such good shape.  And just live with a black and white printer. But I can’t run backup.

So back to Microsoft support and weekend crew who did not seem to know much.  The “level two team” was to call me today.  They did not.

I know this was a long story but I wanted you to know what happened and give info on what I have.  Maybe someone here can figure out why a shadow copy cannot be created.

One more thing I tried.  I changed the computer name back to what it was and still is on the external hard drive I back up to, but it had not effect.

All advice appreciated.  Hope I can get help here.

Thanks for reading this long story.

If you open System Properties and view the System Protection tab, do you see any repeated or orphaned drives?  (A common issue when cloning or restoring.)

If so, highlight them and clear them.  They should disappear if successful.

I am thinking I may have to give up built in back up and use one of the two or three often talked about here.  Have you tried or know about an easy one.

I have read that an external backup program might not have this problem.  Maybe they have their own shadow copies and would not use the VSS used by the built in backup that is not working.

I don’t know what to do.

As I type this I am creating a recovery drive on a usb and it seems to be working.  So I I’ll have that if it finishes and doesn’t send an error message.

Do you or anyone know why the name of my computer changed to Desktop-LCGPU06, when the Microsoft tech did a repair install?  Nothing like that has ever been on my computer.  The three restore points shown above have this strange name.  I don’t know if they would work now that I changed my computer’s name back to PC-W10 which is what it was since I got it 2 years ago.

Also really concerned about the strange program in the start menu:

The securityhealthsystray in your startup is part of Windows Defender.

The odd looking entry in your second screenshot = I have no idea. Looks suspicious. I would keep it disabled.

Given your computers name change, I suggest wiping the old VSS snapshots. This command will do the task nicely:

      vssadmin delete shadows /for=C: /all

OK thanks.  I thought system restore might break if it had updates with a different computer name.

BTW the longer name for the strange file in CCleaner contains the name in task manager so I guess it is all windows defender.

I will delete registry items now.

I Tried to do back up after deleting all the restore points.  I thought it might finally be convinced there is plenty of room for shadow copy but no joy.

The backup program on this computer does not see the empty space for some reason.  Or it detects files that are not there.

Need to find out if it is true I could use one of the backup programs so often mentioned here.  That they do not depend on the VSS that the built in backup does.

Let me know if you come up with any ideas.

“list shadowstorage” shows the DATA D drive has its Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space  set to 9.31 GB (1%).  You can change this at the system protection tab by highlighting the D drive, clicking “configure” and moving the slider.

Not really. You have a copy of the settings.

Increase the VSS space on D: and try again.

If you want to try a 3rd party backup, see this thread: VeraCrypt and Backup.

        To Paul T,

If you want to try a 3rd party backup, see this thread: VeraCrypt and Backup.

I went to this thread. Do you think  MiniTool ShadowMaker free backup may be all I need?

        Also on this thread,

I have found on rare occasions that a deleted full image still holds it space.  I have to use explorer and a file deleter to get rid of the occasional “deleted image”.

I don’t understand this but do you think that might be my problem.  This thread had a lot about failed back up and third party backup programs seeing disc wrong.  I was unsure what info you wanted me to see.

Just the name of the the backup program or were you also trying to tell me deleted files might still be there?

        Thank you

      Meldman and Paul T,

I guess I just don’t understand a lot.  The D drive has never been protected or configured.  When I came over from Win7 I put my documents, pictures and music there and just kept adding to it.  The D drive is 98% empty.  It is an HDD drive with 1 T space.  Don’t need it, that is just the way the computer came.

      D-stuff-2022-04-13

      D-properties-2022-04-13-

I always clicked to choose my own back up settings.  And I  just set it to back up C and D and make and save one image.  I did not let Windows choose because I thought it would only pick up C.  I also have pictures, music and important documents on usb sticks or flash drives or whatever they are called.  I live in hurricane country so when a blow is coming I throw them in a safe deposit box at the local bank.

There is something called file history which I never turned on or set up.  I don’t need something continuously saving files.  I don’t create files that much.  I surf the net, read newspapers and use Office Outlook email.  Also do banking and monitor my credit cards and stuff like that. Once in a while I type a document and print it.

The settings I used in the past for backup worked.  C and D drives and the image were backed up.  I could see them on my external drive.  I think I broke system restore and now it cannot see the space available or it is seeing files that are not there.  I guess when the Microsoft tech did a repair installation it did not repair the built in back up.

I know nothing about any other back up programs.  I will need something simple.  I will try what you suggest about adding D and turn on system protection for it and configure more space and see if that works.

Thank you for your time and thoughts.  I think I may start using another back up program even if this works.  I will let you know.

Paul T are you saying the recovery drive I created only has settings?  I thought it made an image and the image included Win 21H2.  It took a long time.  All this time I have been backing up an image that was only settings?

Thank you both.  I will do as you suggest and let you know if it worked.

No joy.  Same error message.  First time I tried there were no restore points as all had been erased yesterday.  So D was still zero.  Just to be sure I created a restore point and D then showed 8.13MB and C (system) showed  28.78MB. This is what I got again.

I think the shadow copy space that is the problem is on the computer not the external drive.  But I will delete it.  Can’t hurt.  That is not what I have now anyway. That is what broke and Microsoft tech did repair install and changed to 21H2.

BTW all here seem to talk about image back up.  I am wanting to back up files and create an image back up.  Just so I’m sure you know what I am trying to do.

Details: In sufficient storage available to create either shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.

I’m stumped.  This usually means either the destination or target drive and or their partitions do not have enough free space.  Yours all show plenty of free space.  Additionally, VSS shows the E drive has 279 GB of available shadow copy storage.  If you like, you could try the DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and sfc /scannow commands again.

Importantly, you already backup your data to separate, off site storage.

One more thing to try before I recommend the reset option:

Run the checkdisk utility and reboot to force a C: drive check. The command is:

      chkdsk c: /f

You’ll be asked if you want to run this on the next boot cycle, answer Yes.

Reboot, let chkdsk run by NOT touching any keys.

If the above fails, I would recommend a repair install. Short step version is download the latest ISO for your version (or higher) of Windows 10 or 11 and run the setup from your profiles desktop (NOT from booting from BIOS onto the install media.) Choose to keep your files and programs. It will restore everything and keep your stuff intact.

If you need more info about that idea, let us know!

My C- drive is on a SSD drive – SK hynix BC501 HFM256GDJTNG-8310A.  I don’t think I am supposed to use chkdsk on a SSD drive.  It has been optimized a couple times recently.
I have used chkdsk on D and E as they are hard drives.

      Optimize-Drives-2022-04-12-1

Don’t know where I read not to chkdsk SSD drive.  It may have come from Microsoft and that is why they only “optimize”  or I may have confused it with defragging.  So I went searching the net and found this topic right here on AskWoody.  And it is recent.

      https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/use-of-chkdsk-on-ssd/

This is the part that scares me; the person who started the thread said:

“I read something some time ago that chkdsk was not particularly helpful for the health of an SSD.  If I allow execution of chkdsk /f it appears to go through the normal checking sequence, although I do not get any detailed readout of the progress as you would by executing chkdsk from the command line.  It also ends with “100% complete”, but the rotating circle of dots continues to rotate with no particular end in sight and I have to manually turn off the desktop to restart. “

Doing a hard shut down using the power button is what got me into this mess in the first place. Most people in the thread say it is OK to run check disk on an SSD but what if it hangs up like it did for the person who started the above thread.

Also what does he mean manually turn off the desktop to restart?

Have you ever done check an SSD with chkdsk?

It is my measured and professional opinion that chkdsk (as of this writing – and assuming you are patched on any currently supported version of Windows 10 through February 2022) is both safe and sometimes necessary on SSD’s to fix file issues as well as mis-reported free space issues.  Among other things it finds and repairs situations where allocated free space is mis-reported to the kernel.

I believe that defragging is not so great for SSD’s, although there is some controversy on that topic.  The optimization that Windows 10 does for SSD’s is called “trimming.” Which is good and required for their health.

      To NetDef and mledman,

I will do chkdsk c: /f , but not right now.  My brain is tired.  Really.  This has been going on since last Thursday, including all night Thursday night.  I am very slow.  And very nervous and it is worse since the crash Thursday.

I will do it later tonight or tomorrow.  I will get back to you when it is done.

Thanks for all your help and support.

Running chkdsk is safe on an SSD. (SSD health cannot be affected by any standard checks you run in Windows, you need things like crypto miners to affect it.)
Run it without fixing anything to see what it reports.

It would be useful if you could view the Application Event Viewer for VSS errors, to see which disk is having the issue. See this page for a nice picture of the error location.

MiniTool SM is all you need for backups. It allows you to have multiple backups on your external disk – more than 1 backup is always a good idea.
You could also use the software that comes with the WD Easystore.
SM will allow you to make image and file backups to the same external disk (image every month or so, files every day/week). I don’t know if the WD software does too.

I also have pictures, music and important documents on usb sticks or flash drives or whatever they are called

Flash drives are less reliable that HDDs. Backup your important files to the WD disk as well.

      cheers, Paul

Thank you.  The flash drives are a back up to my Easystore external hard drive which also has everything.

I think I will start using  MiniTool SM.  I think I understand it will work even if the built in Win10 backup doesn’t.  I think I understand but not sure it creates its own shadow copies so I can use it if I can’t use Win10.

I got this from event log for Windows logs > Application

Backup did not complete successfully because a shadow copy could not be created. Free up disk space on the drive that you are backing up by deleting unnecessary files and then try again.

This popped up when backup failed the first time and that is when I deleted Windows(old) file.  It didn’t do any good and I have no idea which file is too large.  Total used disc space on C is 58.6 GB and total used disk space on D is 16.7.  It is now recorded in the event log but does not pop up on backup screen anymore.

This is the message that appears on the backup screen now when backup fails. It just says check your back up and when I click button for more information this is what pops up.

A shadow copy could not be created.  Please check VSS and SPP applications event logs for more information.  Details: In sufficient storage available to create either shadow copy storage file or other shadow copy data.

I don’t know if this is helpful or not.

I also set backup to let windows choose, that didn’t do any good either.

I am going to get a cup of coffee.

Your system reserved partition is the EFI System Partition (disk 0 partition 1).  Disk management can not see the files in this partition so it reports 100% free space.

I took a closer look at your original post and found what I suspect is the culprit.

Reposting your original screenshot of your Disk Management view and I’ve highlighted the problem:

      diskmanagement-mpw1

Short explanation:  the special Recovery Partition needs to be just under 500 MB.  ( I like to set mine to 499 exactly.)  The reasons for this are directly related to the minimum free space required for a volume by VSS and the fact that the contents of that drive currently take up roughly 410MB, leaving only (in your specific case) 141MB free.

For volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabytes of free space.
For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space.

Shrinking that volume may sound counter-intuitive, but it does not need more space, and shrinking it to 499MB will leave 85MB free, more than enough, while pushing it down to the lower VSS requirement of 50MB free instead of 320 MB.

The easiest way to shrink this is to download EaseUS partition manager from OlderGeeks website.  That version they are hosting is a safe build, and free from ad-ware and other things you don’t need.  Grab that, install it, and don’t bother registering it or upgrading to the paid Pro level (the free version is enough for this task.)

      (Continued from above)

That size is a problem because in your backup, you’re trying (rightly so) to get a System Image.  VSS needs to take snapshots of all the partitions on the root drive, and it’s failing on that Recovery Partition due to the odd size and the VSS limits imposed on the system.

To solve this, we are going to shrink that volume from 556 MB down to 499 MB exactly.  There will be a tiny amount of unused space when you are done at the very end of the drive: it’s safe to ignore that forever.

Once you’ve installed EaseUS from above, open it and locate the partition we need to shrink.

Hint:  it’s the only one that on your system is 556 MB.

      diskmanagement-mpw-selectrecoveryvolume

Right click that partition and select Resize/Move:

      diskmanagement-mpw-selectresize

In the new screen, change the size from 556 down to 499 and click OK.

      diskmanagement-mpw-newsize

Now at the upper left corner of EaseUS, click the Execute 1 Operation button and click accept/yes to the screens that follow.

      diskmanagement-mpw-executeresize

That’s it!  Close EaseUS and Uninstall it if you wish.

REBOOT your computer, then try the backup again.  I am fairly confident it should work now.

I am pleased and happy to tell you that my computer is now backing up.  I tried it with 506 and it works.

Good thing too because MiniTool ShadowMaker only works with C drive.  Did not seem to see my D drive where all my stuff is.  It made an image I think but only one line of info.  Windows shows much more info on saved image and I could watch numbers change from backup to backup.

I much prefer Win10 built in backup.

It appears that hidden Recovery volume is fragmented, that’s why it won’t go below 506.  And unfortunately the magic number really is 499.

Let me see what I can find that will defrag that (normal tools will not) so you can try again.

The one that got caught in the spam bucket you reposted at #2439399.
So that made the original a duplicate (which was trashed).
If I had to guess why it landed in the bucket, it would be that you may have tried to edit it and in the process did something that caused it. The most common is Submit/Edit/Submit too fast for the system to keep up.

Just an update.  Name of recovery partition was changed to basic data partition by windows.  I didn’t do it I just found it.

      Recovery-name-change-2022-04-15-

And right click on Properties names it “Unlabeled Volume”.

I don’t know if it matters.

I was wondering if compressing the drive would give us the space we need, but probably that would be too easy.

Tossing out some thoughts.  I don’t want you to do anything until others (especially NetDef) have weighed in.

After shrinking the volume with EaseUS partition manager, it is no longer hidden.  It shows 72 kb of free space.  It now can probably be assigned a drive letter and manipulated the same as any other volume.  If this is true, it could be de-fragmented, files could be deleted or all the data deleted and the space reclaimed (as the recovery method now is the image you are creating).

Hang tight as others find the flaws in my reasoning. 🙂

There is now something wrong with the recovery partition. You should not be able to see a file system (NTFS) and it should be 100% free. Do not do anything else with it yet.

Do you have an old backup that includes the recovery partition?
Are you able to restore only 1 partition in Windows Backup? (don’t do it, just see if it’s possible)

I have no back up image.  Deleted it earlier in this thread.  It was not the same version as repair install done by MS tech.  I then created a recovery drive on a USB flash drive.  That is all I have now.

The picture from the Disk Management tool on Win10 has always shown the recovery drive at the end.  First is the EFI partition, then Windows C partition and then the Recovery partition.

This has been the arrangement ever since EFI was installed and put in partition 1.  It used to be called system (or maybe reserve) and was 100MB, but that changed when EFI was put first.  Then the system partition disappeared and recovery showed at the end.

I think reserve partition and recovery partition are two different things.

If you scroll back to the first screen shot of the Disk Management tool on this thread that is the way it looked after MS tech did a repair install.

After EaseUs partition manager reduced Recovery from 556MB to 506MB it left 55MB unallocated.  And the name changed to NTFS.

This is all over my head.  But I think the 100% free “reserve” is still not visible.

I have no back up image

You need to make a backup NOW.

Run Minitool and make an image backup to the external disk.

I meant I had no old backups from before all this mess. But right after the MS tech did the repair install, I created a rescue disc on a flash drive.  And I also made an image back up with the MiniTool ShadowMaker after I installed it 4/14/2022.  I don’t know what I have as I cannot open any backups from the tool.  I don’t know what is there.

But this does not look like a system image to me, too small:

Also, in your post on April 14, 2022 at 2:29 am you mentioned “it would be useful if you could view the Application Event Viewer for VSS errors, to see which disk is having the issue.”  I answered this in my April 14, 2022 at 12:15 pm.  You probably missed it as it was a busy time and lots of posts.

Create a batch file that copies your documents, pictures, and other important files to a separate drive.

Then get your computer to a local down-home repair shop that you trust.

A batch file (.BAT), is a text file you create that contains, in this case, DOS commands to move or copy files on your computer.

this does not look like a system image to me, too small

The mpi file is a ShadowMaker backup file. 47GB looks like a system image of Windows to me – it is compressed. You can open it by selecting it in SM restore.
The fact that it exists suggests that VSS is working, otherwise SM would not have been able to create the backup.

You must have an image backup of the current system before you do anything else, including reinstalling Windows.
I would NOT reinstall Windows yet because you have a working system apart from Windows backup. We may be able to get you sorted without resorting to a reinstall.

Application Event Viewer for VSS errors….  I answered this in my April 14…

And there was nothing of note except the system was in the process of shutting down during one attempt at a snapshot. Since then you seem to have got it to work.

Try making another system image with SM, then check the Event Viewer for VSS errors.

          cheers, Paul

Sorry I went AWOL for part of the holiday weekend!

Catching up on this thread I have some input:  Looks like the system glitched and changed the Recovery partition from hidden to normal.  The only thing that’s supposed to live in there is a small set of files that allows Windows to boot into recovery mode (separate from the main boot files on C:) No personal data is stored there.

At this point, I’m getting the impression that several things have gone wrong (starting with the printer, the multiple tech calls, etc) and there is perhaps some deeper problems that are cascading as we go.

First things first:  as Paul said earlier – get a backup.  I don’t personally feel a system image is needed nor desirable at this point – as that would just be a copy of all the problems you are having now.  Instead, I recommend a flat backup of your entire user folder to a USB drive.

In File Explorer, go to “View” >>  Options (on the right hand side) >> Change Folder and Search Options >> Select the View TAB from new window >> Turn on the following:

      – Show hidden files, folder and drives

      and click OK.

Again in File Explorer:  Find your User Profile folder in c:\Users\(your profile name) and copy that entire folder to your USB drive.  Do the same for any other users on your computer.  And also for the Public folder at C:\users\public.

Follow up and copy any other folders you’ve created on your entire system, all drives, that contain your stuff.

Now set that valuable drive aside.

At this point, if this was my own system misbehaving in such random ways, I would consider doing a clean format and install of the OS and applications.  Locate and make sure you have all your registration keys before starting.

Disconnect all other hard drives inside the chassis except the C: drive.

Boot up your installation media for Windows 10 into advanced setup and use that to delete all existing partitions on the primary drive.  Then do a normal install.  Windows will recreate the partitions it needs, including a new fresh recovery drive.

      • #2440107

Once the OS has been successfully installed, shut it all down for a minute and re-connect the other internal hard drives.  Get the updates you want, install the apps you need, and restore your personal data back from that USB drive you set aside earlier.

I don’t often recommend a clean install – I tend to be very stubborn – but in this case the only steps I can think of that might work also have a high risk to do correctly and involve a lot of time consuming actions.  This way is both faster and – perhaps – safer.

        ~ Group "Weekend" ~

        • #2440121

This is terrible news.  First of all I only understand a little of what you are saying. I don’t know how to disconnect drives.

I don’t have anything in the usual places on C drive.  My stuff is all on D drive. Only thing I may have put on C are programs and I can download them again.  Even have my download folder on D drive.  The folders on C are mostly empty.

I moved my stuff from Win7 to D drive and just kept putting stuff there.

Printer sorks just doesn’t offer color options.  HP tech finally said it may be my color ink is dry even though it shows full or the cartridge just is not working, not the printer.  MS tech said Win10 is working with printer but printer not giving ink.

MS put Office Home and Business 2019 on computer and I can go to that account to get that.  Windows 10 came with this computer I had no key.

A MS tech got my mail set up last week and did an amazing job.  But I have since learned it’s the luck of the draw who ya get.

This is incredibly depressing.  Earlier you suggested a repair install.  I didn’t loose office or any stuff when the MS tech did that.  Are you now saying that probably won’t work?

I don’t know how.  MS tech did it.  Can you walk me through it.  I do not have a copy of Win10.  Current version on my computer is Windows 10 Home Version 21H2
              OS build 19044.1586

If the above fails, I would recommend a repair install. Short step version is download the latest ISO for your version (or higher) of Windows 10 or 11 and run the setup from your profiles desktop (NOT from booting from BIOS onto the install media.) Choose to keep your files and programs. It will restore everything and keep your stuff intact.

              Where is ISO to download?

Don’t understand run setup from profiles desktop.  Does that mean open it from place it lands when downloaded?  Like any other downloaded programs.

Thank you for giving it a second chance.  It has been an upsetting evening.  I am tired.  Can we continue tomorrow?

      Good morning all,

The fact that it exists suggests that VSS is working, otherwise SM would not have been able to create the backup.

I did not know all backup programs used Win10 shadow copy system.  I read where Macrium refers to it, thought MiniTool worked around it.  I guess there must be space.  BTW computer keeps making System restore points also.

      restore-points-2022-04-18-

Since it keeps doing this perhaps it is not working and it keeps trying.  I don’t know.

I agree this is a working computer except for backup.  I am not reinstalling windows in way that I loose anything.  Doing a repair install does not cause hours of hunting for the problem and after it is done does not cause hours of reinstalling programs.

I have very little, but one in particular I do not want to do over is Microsoft Office Home and Business 2019.  BTW the pst files for Office Outlook 2019 are on my D drive.  I move copies of the most recent over on a regular basis.  MS tech said best to leave Office 2019 on C drive but OK to move copies of pst files.

So I am copying my stuff from my D drive to E Easystore.  Really when I look in usual places on C drive my stuff not there.  Will get recent Outlook 2019 files otherwise nothing important there.

I agree with NetDef why do yet another backup of broken system.  I have a files and folder backup and a system backup.

So I went to check folders on C drive mostly empty and I found this:

This must be left over from the repair install done by MS tech on 4/8/2022. I am thinking best to get new one today.

Confused about download and mount of ISO file part. Examples of each in Windows10forum show different pictures of location.  Sometimes DVD drive but I don’t have disc.  Sometimes to Data drive.  Sometimes it is in “This PC”.

You do not need to reinstall Windows, all is well with your machine and you may not have a backup of the current working system.

Concentrate on learning how to use ShadowMaker until you are happy that you have a good backup. Then you can decide if you wan to reinstall Windows.

      NetDef,

So when it was time to select download location it was in This PC > D data file and that is the same as the example picture so I let it go there.  Well of course example picture at the end had it in desktop.

Anyway here it is.  Should I mount from its current location or move it to desktop?  I have not clicked “mount” yet.

Ok I am back just to say thanks again and offer a couple thoughts.

When I successfully backed up the image, system restore was off because I forgot to turn it on after repair install.  It is on now and we will see what happens when my regularly scheduled backup occurs on Sunday morning.

I have run sfc and DISM scans and they are good.  I have created a rescue disc with what I have now.

When the computer restarted after the my repair install with iso file from Microsoft , the name of the computer did not change and the strange file located in startup was not there.  I am wondering if MS tech did a repair install with corrupted or damaged iso.

Don’t know what happened but glad it is over.

One last thing, make a flash drive that boots up. The option to boot from a CD or DVD is not operational.

From Born’s Tech and Windows World site:

Restore disks created with “Backup and Restore (Windows 7)” on devices that have not yet installed any of the Windows updates released from 11 January 2022 are not affected by this problem and should be able to use the backup as expected.

Recovery disks created before the January updates  should work.  recovery disks created after the January updates may work.  Testing recovery media will remove all doubt.

Both my old pre-crisis date CD/DVD wouldn’t boot; the old, old, old flash drive did boot.

I need to create a new bootable flash drive, as flash drives can be somewhat fragile.

I am sorry.  There are just too many similar terms.  I wrote “rescue” but should have called it a “recovery drive”.  This is what I did:

[Either the quote quote=2440097]I created a rescue disc on a flash drive.[/quote]
or the recovery drive you just created can be used to boot your computer if you need to restore an image.  Booting from each would confirm they work.

        I suspect that:
rescue disc on a flash drive =  recovery drive

I missed the comment that you mentioned at:
        https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/i-cant-backup-windows-10-with-built-in-system/#post-2440097

The recovery drive method is the way I make bootable flash drives.
