I updated my desktop to ver. 1909 (thanks to PKCano) and all seems to be okay, however, my laptop and my wife’s are not behaving properly.  They both say that they are up to date, but the system also tells me to update.  When I try to update, it tells me that it is up to date.  How do I get out of this “loop” and get 1909 installed on the laptops.  Thanks.

What version are the laptops running? Are they Home or Pro?
Do you have any Pause set?
Do you have any deferral set?
Have you hidden the Feature update?
Do you have metered connections set to on?
Are you using a third-party update blocker?

      Answers to your questions:

      Versions – Home on both.

Pause/deferral set?  How do I find this out as I might have done this?

Not sure what you mean by “Have you hidden the Feature update?

Metered connections are not on to my knowledge.  How do I check?

I am not sure what you mean by “a third-party update blocker” – examples?

Deferral and Hide Feature Update are Windows Pro settings, that’s why PK asked what version you were using. Pause is directly under Check For Updates. Each click=7 days, 35 days Max. (5 clicks)

Metered connections are not on to my knowledge. How do I check?

Click on UP arrow in bottom right of System Tray (show hidden Icons), then click on Network and then Network again. That will open settings. Click on Network at top. Metered ON/OFF is at bottom of list.

I am not sure what you mean by “a third-party update blocker” – examples?

Here are four examples of a blocker.

I’d give the machines a couple of days to settle and then check again.

In the meantime you can check the Event Log for errors and let us know what you find.

      cheers, Paul

Bluetrix, I do not see “Pause” directly under “Check for Updates”.  I have attached a “cut” of what I see on my laptop screen.  Hope this helps.

I do not have any “blockers” operational.

        Ron,
You must have an early version of Windows 1909, in which the Pause feature was not included.

Type winver in the search box on your desktop. It should show you the following with version and build.

        winver

Also, as @zig said, click on advanced options. At the bottom of that page a toggle on/off for pause may be there, turn it on if you want to pause updates.

Paul T, I have been trying this for over a week and, obviously, getting nowhere, thus my post here.  I don’t think a couple of more days is going to assist in its resolution.

As far as the “Event Log” is concerned, I am afraid I do not know how to access this and I do not understand how this will help resolve my situation.

You’re likely running 1809.  Its EOL is May 2020.

I suggest creating USB installation media using the Media Creation Tool.  Then while booted into Windows, insert the USB into a USB port, open the contents with File Exporer and run Setup.exe.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!
We were all once "Average Users". We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems, we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

Zig, here is the screen I get when I click on Advanced Options.

For others, Version 1809 is currently running on both laptops.

      Win R, eventvwr

      Look for “Critical” and “Errors”.
Post details of the most recent problems, or post a screen shot.

NirSoft FullEventLogView might be an easier tool.

      cheers, Paul
