I realize that this very well may be an his issue, but:

Is there some registry entry or file that is commonly used for checking as to what the default mail client is?

What you need is Google: http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=registry+…ult+mail+client%5B/url%5D. See if the first hit (suitably amended for Outlook) does what you want… Or the second…

What I found is that while Outlook was acting as the default, (for some reason) it wasn’t showing up in IE/Tools/Internet Options/Programs.

I ran an install/repair and that seemed to fix it.
