If I understand correctly, IE is the HTML rendering engine for Outlook HTML emails and Word HTML. Also web galleries in Lightroom, but that is a different question.

What happens Wednesday when support for Internet Explorer ends??? What stops working?? And if not then, when??

    Googling has me confused.

    Appreciate your opinions / facts.

I believe Office 2010 uses the Word rendering engine for HTML in both Word and Outlook. That is why the HTML rendering in Office 2010 is lacking.

The standalone web browser stops getting support but that doesn’t mean that all of that underlying html support/engine stops.

I’m going to be covering his in the Patch Tuesday newsletter next week.  I honestly don’t think many of us will notice.

Large businesses who have line of business apps/internal web sites that demand IE and nothing but IE will be impacted and will need to scramble.

I’ve personally seen several LOB apps of mind install updates on OLDER versions of the software that rely on a web app to log in for authentication before the main application is launched.

What is the MSHTML (Trident) engine? How does that relate to IE mode? And what about WebOC? Or the MSHTA app?

The MSHTML (Trident) engine is the underlying platform for Internet Explorer 11. This is the same engine used by IE mode and it will continue to be supported (in other words, unaffected by this announcement). Both WebOC and the MSHTA app will continue to be supported as they rely on the MSHTML engine which is unaffected by this announcement.”

@SB – thanks so much. I’ll let you know about Lightrrom web galleries., then. If Outlook and Word see no issues, that’s the big ones.

which you did not specify in your 1st post

I just did an update to Quickbooks on my machine which forced me to update as they used IE 11 for online banking features. Had to refresh my connection to bank which was a pain but it’s working. As I looked into it, supposedly my version (2021) doesn’t work with Win11 per their site. Could have fooled me – it has been working fine for better than 6 months so maybe it was the IE mode in Edge that had it working IDK! Actually it was faster before I updated!

From what I read earlier today, I forgot where already, MS Edge has/will continue to have a builtin IE compatibility feature.  I hate Edge and only use it as a last resort when Firefox stumbles on some sites.

      OK, update and questions please:

IE no longer does much but it opens. I wisjh I had made better notes, but either when opening IE OR Edge the first time today (neother my default browser) something.js reported now ready to run. Wish I made better notes.

      Outlook email no issue.

      Lightroom galleries no issue.

But its early. IE just stopped woirking and I have not rebooted yet.

      So, questions:

I have 7 Edge processes running in the background. Could not find more than two for updates in Task Scheduler. What are these and is there a way to elin=minate or minimize the number of processes? This is with EDge closed. When open, even more.

And has anyone seen the js alert in their browsers today and know what that is exactly?

      Thanks.

OK, turns out Microsoft added Edge to the startup apps today. Hoping there is no issue by disabling that from startup. And that IF I open Edge in the future, the processes end opn closing, but I am tending to doubt that.

      Got some testing to do.

      • #2453720

In Edge Settings, at System and performance, check that Startup boost and Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed are switched off.

In Edge Settings, at Edge bar, check that Automatically open Edge bar when the computer starts is switched off.

    • #2453710

      Testing done.

When disabled Edge from startup, no running processes.

When Edge is opened and closed, it leaves behind 7 running processes. I wish it did not.

And an aside, Internet Explorer still is in the Open With menus.

      • #2453718

@rebop2020 Try going to settings > System & Performance Disable startup boost, continue running background extensions… I also disable efficiency mode. When I exit Edge all processes exit.

        Never Say Never

Very cool. Thanks. Off to go check.

And indeed, all processes stop when those settings employed. Thanks so much.
