And on my Win 8.1 laptop I am seeing this little intruder under Optional items as well:

      Intel – net – 11/11/2018 12:00:00 AM – 18.33.15.1

…on the other hand and to be fair: although Intel PROset Wi-Fi driver I currently have installed here is marked as 20.90.0.0 on the tin, its driver file itself is actually older (18.33.14.3).

There are also two security patches, er, announcements that aren’t on the main list:

CVE-2019-0624 | Skype for Business 2015 Spoofing Vulnerability, which has a patch dated Jan. 8, KB 3061064

CVE-2019-0646 | Team Foundation Server Cross-site Scripting Vulnerability, which apparently is fixed in Team Foundation Server 2018 Release 3.

And on my Win 8.1 laptop I am seeing this little intruder under Optional items as well: Intel – net – 11/11/2018 12:00:00 AM – 18.33.15.1 …on the other hand and to be fair: although Intel PROset Wi-Fi driver I currently have installed here is marked as 20.90.0.0 on the tin, its driver file itself is actually older (18.33.14.3).

FYI, the way this works is that Intel releases a driver package, labeled with the version number of their newest drivers for their newest chipsets.  But the driver package includes the latest patches of their drivers for older chipsets as well.

      i.e.  “20.100.0” downloadable package contains:

      – 20.100 drivers for Jefferson Peak / Thunder Peak chips released end of 2017
      – 20.70 drivers for Oak Peak / Maple Peak chips released early 2017
      – 19.51 drivers for Stone Peak chips released in 2014
      – 18.33 drivers for Wilkins Peak chips released in 2013

(Worth noting that Intel’s v20 drivers are 64-bit only.)

In your specific case, the 18.33.14.3 driver shipped with the 20.90 package released in November 2018.  The 20.100 package came out December 2018 and includes the 18.33.15.1 driver….. but it only contains fixes for Windows 10, so you don’t need to upgrade.  That’s why it’s listed as Optional, not Recommended for your Windows 8.1 system.

Anyone using an older driver package than 20.90 should upgrade though…. Intel is issuing product fixes for their Wi-Fi stack almost every month.  They’ve fixed multiple BSOD issues across all versions of Windows.

      Hope this helps.

Looks like they’re only for “seekers” — they only install if you click “Check for updates.” I don’t see them coming in through the Automatic Update chute.

Which we neverrrrrrrrrrr want to do!  Regarding Win 10 ver 1803, do you know what the CU contains?  Is it available via the MS Catalog for manual installation?

      • #312772

Regarding Win 10 ver 1803, do you know what the CU contains?

        Yes:

Addresses an issue in Microsoft Edge that fails to trigger the focusin event if the focus event listener of an element shifts focus to another element.

Addresses an issue that prevents sharing and timeline features and roaming settings from working for accounts that use Chinese, Japanese, and Korean languages.

Addresses an issue that may prevent some applications from displaying the Help (F1) window correctly.

Addresses an issue that causes power options to appear on the Windows security screen when the per user group policy to hide power options is set.

Addresses an issue that prevents links for certain compressed file formats from resolving.

Addresses an issue that causes BitLocker Network Unlock to fail on generation 2 virtual machines when it’s used in a network that only supports IPv4.

Addresses a privacy issue with apps that obtain the BroadFileSystemAccess capability without a user’s consent.

Addresses an issue in which WAM logging causes some applications such as Microsoft Office to stop working.

Addresses an issue that causes catalog signed scripts, including those shipped as part of Windows, to incorrectly generate a Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) failure audit event.

Addresses an issue in which Windows Driver Frameworks causes high CPU utilization. As a result, the user-mode driver stops working when the device resumes from Hibernate (S4).

Addresses an issue that may cause a 30-second delay when deleting or renaming a link in a Distributed File System (DFS) Namespace. Additionally, renaming a folder may take 30 seconds when multiple users work in a group share simultaneously, and File Explorer stops responding.

Addresses an issue that prevents you from overwriting a file in a shared folder because of an Access Denied error when a filter driver is loaded.

Addresses an issue that may cause third-party applications to have difficulty authenticating hotspots.

Addresses an issue that may cause a blue screen to appear when a Thunderbolt storage device is attached.

Addresses an issue that throws an exception when instantiating SqlConnection after you install the August Preview of Quality Rollup or September 11, 2018 .NET Framework update.

        January 15, 2019—KB4480976 (OS Build 17134.556)

Is it available via the MS Catalog for manual installation?

        Yes:

2019-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803

        Windows 11 Pro version 22H2 build 22621.2361 + Microsoft 365 + Edge

Yes: 2019-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803

So it looks like this fixes several of the currently known problems but isn’t distributed with automated updates?  (Well yeah, not seeing this one in the pipeline either.)

Right. What’s the deal with that anyway? What does it break then that kb4480966 doesn’t? Even the Edge issue with local IPs isn’t new with this…

And same thing for the 1709 variant and others.

But, I see that most of this was apparently backported to 1607, so Server 2016… just a couple of days later… hm.

Is there a way on Windows 10 to look for updates without being a seeker?, like to force to start whatever Windows 10 does to look for updates? some scheduled task or something?

        Not out of the box.

There are aftermarket tools for this, most of them aimed for corporations with a large installed base, and then there’s WUMT and WuMgr …

Or you can roll your own with a few lines of Powershell, along the lines of https://gist.github.com/Grimthorr/44727ea8cf5d3df11cf7 :

        $UpdateSession = New-Object -ComObject Microsoft.Update.Session
        $UpdateSearcher = $UpdateSession.CreateupdateSearcher()
        $Updates = @($UpdateSearcher.Search("IsHidden=0 and IsInstalled=0").Updates)
        $Updates | Select-Object Title

Hi, I tested the script bu it only list the updates. To force a manual scan for updates and installing them from the command line this worked for me:

          %systemroot%\system32\usoclient.exe StartInteractiveScan

          https://omgdebugging.com/2017/10/09/command-line-equivalent-of-wuauclt-in-windows-10-windows-server-2016/

(curiously usoclient.exe StartScan didn’t work for me)

I wanted this cause I have completely disabled Windows Update and I needed a quick way to enable it, list the needed updates (thanks a lot for the script) and then have the option to let Windows Update install them or run wushowhide.diagcab to hide unwanted updates.

Curiously the script lists also all the updates hidden by wushowhide.diagcab

        … and a .202 right after. Wonder what’s up with that…

        • #312835

Java updates that end in odd numbers indicate security fixes only, while even numbers contain security fixes, bug fixes and/or new features.

          • #313238

And tend to not be “public releases” right away.

Oh well, guess they’re doing a “final feature release” of free Java 8 before it goes to paid updates only, or something.

    • #312509

So for 2019 there are even more updates per month to expect, weekly almost :-/

Please excuse my ignorance, but wasn’t all support for version 1703 supposed to end in October 2018?  Why is 1703 still receiving updates?

EDIT:  I just noticed a Wikipedia article which indicates that although the Home and Pro editions of version 1703 have an October 9, 2018 end-of-support date, the Enterprise and Education editions of 1703 have an October 8, 2019 end-of-support date , and 1703’s mobile edition has a July 11, 2019 end-of-support date.  If Wikipedia is correct, I think I may have answered my own question.  Sorry for bothering you.

      Regards, Laptop Boy

The MS pages linked in the blog above for the v1703 update say this:

Windows 10, version 1703, reached end of service on October 8, 2018. Devices running Windows 10 Home, Pro, Pro for Workstation, and IoT Core editions will no longer receive monthly security and quality updates that contain protection from the latest security threats. To continue receiving security and quality updates, Microsoft recommends updating to the latest version of Windows 10.

IMPORTANT: Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Education editions will receive one year of additional servicing at no cost.
