From Nathaniel Parker: Apple released iOS 13.1 yesterday for the iPhone and iPod Touch, adding additional features that did not make it in the iOS 13

“An Apple Operating Systems Update list” is sorely needed as we can no longer trust Apple updates aka Microsoft.  Thank you, Ask Woody.

After upgrading my iPhone SE from iOS 12.x to 13.1 rearranging apps does not work (properly) anymore when I try to move an app into or within a folder.
Secondly, the search ‘app’ from the stand by screen won’t disappear after clicking Cancel. Have to reboot.
Thirdly, not a bug but an annoyance: can’t choose a picture anymore as a background directly from Photos. Have to go into Settings to choose a picture.

Not happy. Apple seems to go the MS way.

I’m really looking forward to an iPadOS deep dive and hopefully that will include actually being able to plug in a flash drive and some more desktop OS like file reading and writing sans the need for any indirect hop via the cloud.

Apple really needs a MacOS based tablet to properly compete with MS’s surface devices and that’s what I’m really waiting for actually.  But iPadOS appears to be a step in the right direction. External Storage without needing any cloud intermediary on the iPad may just make for my first tablet purchase ever, well that and the ability to use a 3 button mouse if needed.

According to what I have been reading, the most alarming problem affecting Mac Pro users (the “trashcan” model, so called because of the shape of the cylindrical “box” that contains the computer hardware), that may prevent them from rebooting their machines and cause them other difficulties, may be caused by the update mechanism of Chrome. Also that, whatever the reason, it affects only users that have deactivated SIP (System Integrity Protection), a feature that comes active by default when one buys a new Mac. The purpose of SIP is to restrict the user from damaging by mistake areas of the operating system critical to the proper and safe use of the Macs (including safe from malware). It is a sort of, I gather, “nanny” feature to keep us little boys and girls from fooling around with things we shouldn’t. But it is not many who feel they need, or actually need, to have a full control of their Macs, but rather can live quite nicely with the somewhat more limited one still available with SIP on. For my part, I use Chrome now and then and let it update itself automatically, now and then; I don’t need or have AVID (that I have found out is a problematic and rather old application used by people working in visual media production for editing video), and I can do pretty much all I have to with my MacBook Pro without disabling SID. And my “pretty much” includes a considerable and frequent interaction, via the command line, with the operating system, macOs (or OS X, as it was called earlier on).

Some further reading, here, I think explains what is SID and what it does, both clearly and in some detail:

Further research, and now lacking confidence in Apple’s most recent iOS 13.1. Rather than highlight with quotes on specific problems, here’s the entire post on Forbes for iOS 13.1 issues. Suspect there will be lots more reports filtering in on various sites for this newest iOS update. Many of the problems are being found in the newer iPhone models it seems, but my advice is use caution regardless of which iPhone you own that is capable of updating to the newest iOS. https://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2019/09/24/apple-ios-13-iphone-11-pro-max-upgrade-keyboard-problem-iphone-xs-max-xr-update/

I have been using Gordon Kelly’s column for some time now, but it will be good to get an Ask Woody perspective as well.

I get the feeling there will be another point release to follow 13.1 soon, 13.11 that may be a smaller fix opposed to a full iOS image download.
It’s always the same with new apple iOS version releases, point releases follow on soon after over a few months in my experience.
Remember after any iOS update, the iOS device will index and slow down whilst doing so.

Network connectivity issues with iPad Air2 for iOS/ipadOS 13.1.

      https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250663618

Apple community / Sounds like a network connected password issue. Some folks say they can connect via an open source WiFi connection but then that leaves you unprotected and vulnerable of course. Stinks. Better to go back to the Stone Age and send messages and write via rock and a hard place. But at least it’s solid.

Found out the AVID issue relates to a Google Chrome update.

Nathan, I have seen the same thing that I mentioned  in this earlier entry:

I am not sure if this is likely to create problems unless one has the SID feature disabled, something I don’t have to do to use my Mac for any of the things I need it for. I really would like to know your opinion on this.

You’re correct, it only occurs on Macs with SIP disabled, or Macs that don’t support SIP.

SIP was released in OS X El Capitan. Details about it are here:

          https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204899

Apparently, these Macs were either not upgraded to OS X El Capitan or later (they originally shipped with Mavericks; possible since IT can drag their feet on upgrading), or someone at IT disabled SIP (why they would ever want to do this I don’t know). I’ve always left SIP enabled on my Macs since El Capitan. I wanted all the security I can.

Apple releases iOS 12.4.2 for iPhones and iPads dropped by iOS 13

Apple today has released iOS 12.4.2 for a handful older iPhone and iPad models that were not updated to iOS 13 last week.

The update is available for the iPad Air, the iPad mini 2, and iPad mini 3, as well as the 6th gen iPod touch, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. All of these devices were dropped from support with iOS 13.

Apple has also released watchOS 5.3.2 for the Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2. These models will receive watchOS 6 later this fall.

Both watchOS 5.3.2 and iOS 12.4.2 include a fix for a security bug discovered by Google’s Project Zero team:

Impact: A remote attacker may be able to cause unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution
Description: An out-of-bounds read was addressed with improved input validation.
