Ever since upgrading to 16.3, I keep getting bugged to turn on Two-Factor Authentication.

I think I understand that I can make my iphone a Trusted Device, but am concerned what happens if I misplace my phone.

So I think I understand that you can add another phone number as an alternative to receive the verification code?

In exploring this, it is confusing in that some info says that you can add an alternative phone number from your own iphone.  Other info seems to indicate you have to actually use the alternative iphone as another Trusted Device, and then enter your Apple ID into that iphone. But that iphone would already have its own Apple ID so how would that work?

Can someone explain how this all works and how to set up an alternative iphone number in the event I misplace my iphone?

Also, what do you do when it is time to change out/ upgrade your iphone?

Have a look at this Apple support article: Two-factor authentication for Apple ID.

It’s a pretty comprehensive explanation of 2FA and how to set it up. It also includes info about trusted devices.

      Hope this helps…

EDIT: Ha! @Alex5723 beat me to it… 🙂

But then check this one out from Apple:

      https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/manage-factor-authentication-apple-iphd709a3c46/16.0/ios/16.0

Sections: Add another Device and Add a trusted phone number.

These sections are where the confusion is for me.

      >Another Trusted Device –  sign in on another device with the same Apple ID?

      >Add a Trusted phone number – Trusted phone numbers don’t automatically receive verification codes?

sign in on another device with the same Apple ID?

      Yes and yes.

How can an iphone accept more than one Apple ID?  First grade level Apple education, please.

Unfortunately I keep getting referred back to the same literature that I can’t seem to make sense of to begin with.

To be more specific regarding Adding another Trusted Phone number:

So using my iphone, I add another family member’s iphone number.

To confirm/validate, my iphone sends out a verification number: back to my iphone? or to the iphone number I just added?

Then I enter the verification number: into my iphone? or the iphone I just added?

      Then Done?

How to use the added number: ?

I lose or don’t have my iphone – how do I make use of the added number?

Do I have to use the iphone of the added number?  Or what do I use?  What am I trying to obtain? A verification number?  Where would I enter it if I don’t have my iphone?

Whenever I do something that requires a verification of my Apple ID, does the validation request go to both my iphone AND the family member’s iphone?

      So confusing .

Good questions.  I’d like to know myself.  I don’t see where or if the Apple Two Factor Auth instructions makes this clear.  Have you been to an Apple Store if one is near or maybe to your carrier to ask them?  I know you can get the verification number on a Mac if you have one but on another phone you’ve set up…you have a good question.  Good luck.  Let us know.
