    Hi

Our fleet of computers are turning from desktops to laptops and I see more and more staff taking their laptops home at night bypassing my regular nightly update schedule via BatchPatch.

I have always avoided downloading and installing updates while users are logged in case the updates crash their laptops.

I was wondering how other people are handling the problem of patching laptops and maybe I am being too paranoid by not installing updates while users are logged in

      Are they 10’s or 7’s?

In the 7 and earlier era weird stuff would occur if patches had been installed and systems not yet rebooted.  In the 10 era I have accidentally left a machine unbooted and never noticed issues.

I’m responsible for patching about 200 desktops, laptops, and Surfaces, all running flavors of Windows 10. I use Patch Manager Plus and push patches during the day. Despite multiple reminders to the mobile device users that they need to restart them after the updates are finished, I have several users that don’t restart them for days. I have never (in the couple of years that I’ve been doing it) had an issue that I can trace to that.

Just my single point of anecdata.

We use WSUS and roll the update server address via group policy “Specify intranet Microsoft update service location”.
The second setting is called “Do not connect to any Windows Update Internet locations”.
This means, if users are outside our network, they are not able to reach update server. And they do not have admin rights, so they cannot install updates manually at home.

The thing is, that updates SHOULD install wihtout problems, its designed to install patches while user is using his PC/laptop and wait for reboot. The percentage is above 99.99% success.

      Hi

Thanks to all for taking the time to respond.

I will change my old habits and install during the day.

Things will be much better that way as well

      Thanks
