There has been some discussion about the pluses and minuses of on-line meeting apps. In May, there was an article on Zoom: Is It Safe? in the AskWoody Plus Newsletter. There has been improvements made in Zoom, since then. But it is always good to be aware of alternatives.

Just this week @Cybertooth pointed out that Zoom has shut down activist accounts, at the behest of the Chinese government, and that he will be trying out Jitsi Meet. My family and friends have been experimenting with it, as well. And? Well, it works…

It’s FOSS has an article- Jitsi Meet: A Free & Open Source Video Conferencing Solution That is Also Free to Use Without Any Set Up that goes through Jitsi Meets features, and how to use it, including pictures- the clearest how-to I’ve found so far.

Personally, I choose open source software over proprietary software, whenever possible. The source code is readily reviewed by anyone with the knowledge to do so… and you aren’t locked into the shenanigans that proprietary software developers can pull. The Jitsi Meet developers seem to have put a lot of thought into what end users want and need. For those that want to have control end to end, Jitsi can be placed on their own server (good for larger businesses, with tech support). For the rest of us, Jitsi Meet requires no registration… and your data is not being targeted by the developers. Worth a try!

Interesting that one can (seemingly ) run ones own server.

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

All good open source projects allow you to run your own server, Bitwarden, OwnCloud, etc.

          cheers, Paul
