KB4507420 shows in the Restore hidden update window and also shows in the Review your update history window.

Why would an update show in the Restore hidden update window and in the Review your update history window at the same time?

    KB4507420, 2019-07 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 for x64

    Thanks,

    Sparky

My best guess is that you installed it once then it was re-released and you decided to hide it rather than install again.

My best guess is that you installed it once then it was re-released and you decided to hide it rather than install again.

After installing the August 2019 patches, I then checked for updates in WU again, that is when it showed up.

It may also be that you had accepted the .NET rollup, which installed the pieces appropriate to your needs at the time. This could be verified through referencing the Installed Updates table rather than update history. But not all the pieces were installed, because they were not needed. Then, after this event, changes were made to the Frameworks installed or activated in your system. This would cause Windows Update to recognize a new need for a .NET update and would offer the entire rollup to you again. Does this theory match any details you have experienced?

In any case, it appears you have trusted WU to update .NET Frameworks in the past. I suggest you continue that approach and allow WU to update this item again. You may find that there is no problem at all, and no additional patch would be applied. It was only mismatched metadata. This could be verified after the attempt by consulting the Installed Updates table to check dates associated with the pieces appropriate to each Framework.

        Kind of.

        Before installing KB4507420 again,
        update history showed KB4507420 8/06/19
        installed updates  showed KB4506997 8/06/19

        After installing KB4507420,
        update history shows, KB4507420 8/24/19 and KB4507420 8/06/19
installed updates shows KB4506997 8/06/19  (no change)

        No restart was required.

        “It was only mismatched metadata.”
Could have been, Although KB4474419 & KB4512506 failed at 1st install and the installation was reversed. That reversal may have shuffled the deck. After that happened that is when WU showed KB4507420 again.

Ran WU again and no more patches appeared and WU is up to date.

        Thanks,

I never feel that satisfied feeling when a problem evaporates without letting me know why. One of those modern day disappointments I suppose. Glad it reads normal at least. Funny stuff happens.
