If I wanted to learn all about how I could make automated mailing lists, and other similar things, (such as guestbooks and search facilities for a website), and not only how to make the list, but what prerequisites I needed in terms of knowledge of script languages, cgi-bin directories, etc, who or where could I ask?

At this stage, I envisage number of subscribers at 50-200.

I’m really not sure what facilities I’d need. I’m really trying to find out whether it’s possible for me to set up a mailing list where people “subscribe” and automatically have their names added, and can also “unsubscribe” and have their names removed. I know there are lots of places on the web (eg. Matt’s Script Archive seems to be a popular one) to get pre-done scripts for this type of thing, but I’m interested in knowing how to do it myself ‘from scratch’…

From your original posting in the Lounge, I’m afraid I was thinking you were looking for list-server software to run on your own pc/server – but I now realise you are probably looking for something that would be placed and run on the web.
For mail servers, checkout ">MDaemon which will give you unlimited lists from the basic package.
A quick search using Google for ‘forum software’ throws up other possibilities – e.g. Agora – which appears to be a free offering of what you are after!
      HTH.
