I updated my Windows 10 22H2 machine with the March patches on the 14th.  Since then I’ve read that KB5023696, once installed on some machines, was causing performance issues, lock ups and BSD’s and since Patch Tuesday I’ve had all of those symptoms.  I uninstalled KB5023696, setup my PC to not patch for 30 days and since it was removed all of the symptoms I was having have disappeared and performance is good again but what do I do now?

This is the first time I have ever had to remove a Patch Tuesday update so now that I have my PC setup to not update for 30 days what do I do to ensure that I’m not putting the patch back on until it’s fixed and if a fix isn’t immediate, how do you get other timely updates?  I feel like a newbie on this.  Thanks.

I would look first for driver updates from your manufacturer.

Thanks for the reply but I’m not following your response. That KB is a security patch  and I’m not understanding what that has to do with a driver. In addition, my system is a bit old and I’m unsure where to look for a driver that need to be updated or if any updates even exist.

You said you had a blue screen.  That’s a sure sign you have a driver that needs updating. Blue screens of death ALWAYS are triggered by drivers that are out of date. Patches will sometimes introduce security changes that in turn trigger bsod’s because it’s missing a driver that is expected.

Type in the search box device manager.

Launch it.  Look specifically for the video card and which manufacturer it is.

List the name of it and we can see if there’s an update.  I still find my older machines get video driver updates as well as firmware updates.

      From your link :

If you have experienced any of these problems after installing the update, you can uninstall it by following these steps:

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
Click on View update history and then Uninstall updates
Select KB5001330 (April 13 2021) from the list and click Uninstall
      Restart your device

Angst about windows updates issues is a good nudge to start making regular disk images.

I had to laugh at myself this morning. I opened the Windows update screen from settings and was musing that next months update preview is already offered. Then somehow I managed to make an unintentional click on the download PREVIEW button.

Zero stress. No rolling back an update. I simply waited for the restart, then jumped into the Macrium recovery screen. In less than 10 minutes, I was back to the point of my most recent image which was and is always just before I shut down my machine yesterday. It was Like nothing ever happened. It’s a beautiful thing.

With my deepest respect to Windows Latest but I’m not seeing widespread issues with the March releases.  BSODs are always driver related.

Perehaps we are talking about 2 different things.  What I saw was that my screen would freeze and then a blue screen would pop up saying that something went wrong and Windows needed to capture some information and a percentage number would appear on screen that would count to 100% and then reboot.  At the bottom of the most recent screen it said “Memory Management”.  Since rolling back KB5023696 I have not had the above happen and the performance of my PC has been great.   My concern now is what do I do next?  It’s uninstalled but if I turn updates back on it will reinstall and then what do I do about other patches and security updates that may come out in April and beyond?

Here are a couple of links regarding this KB.
