>Windows 11 updates include fixes for gaming quality mice.

I haven’t noticed any changes in my gaming mouse. That’s usually handled by Dell on my system.

New! This update improves your computer’s performance when you use a mouse that has a high report rate for gaming. To learn more, see “Reduced game stutter with high report rate mice” in Delivering Delightful Performance for More Than One Billion Users Worldwide.

Correction:

I noticed that my gaming mouse now scrolls faster through more text. It isn’t really an improvement since I liked it better the way it was. I haven’t been able to play any games yet since I am still trying to download these ginormous apps from XBox on a slow connection. I will have to see if I can rectify the mouse problems in Device Manager.

I don’t know what these XBox programmers would do if they had to fit their program in 28Kb of RAM on a 40 or 80 column Commodore PET. You had to be really smart in those days.

Further to above:

I discovered a “Game Mode” button in one of my Device Manager mouse entries. It was turned on. I turned it off but didn’t notice much difference.

I don’t know if the button was there before, because I never looked before.

Take a look at the “Wheel” tab in your mouse settings.

MouseWheelSettings

It controls how fast (i.e. #lines/notch) the scroll wheels moves.

I did notice that the account badges notification area is not there. I have a local account.

Are you seeing any MS Account popups if you are signing in with a Local Account? From what I’ve seen previously a yellow dot will show on the Account picture/icon on the Start menu. When you click this, the MS popup to try to change to an MS Account will show – not sure if it’s there all the time.

I posted a question about this in another thread in the forum –
July’s Patch Tuesday is here
The reply showed that these notifications could be turned off in Settings/Personalization/Start/Show Account Related Notifications – On/Off.

Hopefully, if there is no way to turn these popups off they won’t appear. If they do can you post here? That would be very helpful.

Thanks.

You might try O&O Shutup, a software portable, that inhibits some undesired Microsoft behavior.

Thanks for that. I believe the options to turn off the notifications looks like this. Not sure what’s going on with this setting as some people see this and some don’t.

• #2573370

I am hesitant to run Windows update soon after they are released so I haven’t downloaded the latest one to see how intrusive these “badges” are if you have chosen a Local Account. I normally wait at least a couple of weeks or until Susan gives the go ahead to see what issues appear.

I may be old enough to be losing marbles, but should ‘not’ be in the following the following?

I’m not recommending Windows updates at this time. I’ll have more details in the newsletter on Monday.

• Windows 11 22H2: Recommended
• Windows 11 21H2: If you have a Windows 11 PC and are a gamer, recommended
• Windows 10 22H2: Recommended

Maybe I am not not recommending Windows updates at this time (˵ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°˵)

Sorry about the poor attempt at humor. How about, “I am only recommending some Windows updates at this time”.

No matter what, being a low risk user, I always defer until a few days before the following patch Tuesday then batten the hatches again.

This is the listing for the feature release that I’m recommending, not whether updates should be installed.

As to that ‘badging’ nag as I understand it, it will be phased in and won’t happen immediately. So some may get it sooner than later.

Hi Susan, Thanks for the “badging” info. Is it also your understanding that these notifications can be turned off in Personalization/Start settings as per my above post? I know that this setting appeared in Preview/Development for this update – I’m not involved in this – but hasn’t made it to the final version. I’m assuming that for this setting to appear (hopefully before any “badges” do) this would require a further update?

Thanks Jim.

As a personal preference and from the “assist” viewpoint, troubleshooting would be more straight-forward if Microsoft released all bells and whistles at the same time for the same version and build. It’s very difficult to determine if there’s error or delayed feature when some users receive a new update toy and other users do not receive the new update toy.

So far trending issues are:

Consumers:

Windows 11 updates include fixes for gaming quality mice.

Only for version 22H2 … which you don’t recommend for gamers.

(Despite new gaming features and issues fixed last year in 22H2.)

I don’t. Clearly Microsoft doesn’t listen to me. I am still tracking too many oddities on the Reddit/Windows 11 and they primarly are gamers. Ergo why – if you can- try to stay off Windows 11 22H2.

About KB5028166 update for Windows 10 22H2 – defer or avoid?

I see a recent report from Neowin about KB5028166 causing a bunch of problems.

1st paragraph there starts off like this:

Last week, Microsoft released the KB5028166 update for Windows 10 users as a part of its monthly Patch Tuesday updates. However, it looks like the latest update did more harm than good as users are now reporting various issues after installing the new update.
