I noticed this week metered connection is grayed off and I can’t change it. Anybody else seeing this?

One PC is 1803 Pro 64-bit and the other is 1803 Home 32-bit. The 1803 Home 32-bit updated the Oct 2019 Cumulative Patch KB4520008 which I am OK with.

I would like to turn the metered connection back on. If someone has a registry edit, I am OK with doing it that way. My objective is to use the metered connection to control the Windows Update patches.

The 1803 Pro 64-bit tried to upgrade to 1903 Features but I used WUShowHide to stop it.

Firstly For the sake of clarity, have you tried verifying the metered connection setting with an account that has Administrator privileges?

Last resort: There is an article for altering the registry but it is three years old and you should have a working system image ready for restoration in case failure if the instructions are still applicable to version 1803.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4091367/windows-10-cannot-change-metered-connection-setting        Try following this, I think this at least will clarify your doubts.

I noticed this week metered connection is grayed off and I can’t change it. … I would like to turn the metered connection back on.

The fact that it’s greyed out means that not only is the connection metered but a data limit has been set. Remove the data limit and the meter connection will become ungrayed.

AFAIK there’s no method to do this via a registry edit. However, it’s so easy to fix that a registry edit is not needed. Here’s how to (using my Wi-Fi connection as an example):

      1. Click on the Change data limit settings link below the grayed-out connection:

      metered_connection1

      2. In the Data limit section, click on the Remove limit button then on the Remove button in the dialog which appears:

      metered_connection2-1

Now return to the properties of the metered connection and you should find that the toggle switch is no longer grayed.

      Hope this helps…

Thanks I will have a look.

Today 1803 Pro Admin is showing Metered Connection on, when I was applying Office Click-to-Run.

Since the other day, I have applied KB4521861 (Oct Service Stack) and KB4520008 (Oct Monthly Cumulative Update, MCU). I thought maybe this changed it. [1803 Pro]

I still need to check if KB4516058 (Sept MCU) changed 1803 Home.

        HOLY!

We were searching all around and wondering why the DusmSvc Service always kicked back the Metering for LAN adapters, when restarted. It was the LIMIT.

Next question: which application did set a limit?

But just a late THANK YOU to your comment, so you know it’s valuable if you provide knowledge to the crowd. 😀

Note that this registry edit method is solely for creating a metered connection from the days when only Wi-Fi (or Cellular) connections could be set as metered… but users wanted to meter their ethernet connections.

It has nothing to do with the Data limit setting… which is what actually grays the toggle switch.

      Hope this helps…

Thanks, I will keep it in mind.

Doing will give me a better understanding of the difference. I will try the Data Limit setting before the Registry edit.

I used Sysinternals/Technet’s Process Monitor to monitor the changes to the registry when I amended the data limit settings. I still couldn’t find a way of toggling the switch to un-gray it using just the registry.

          Hope this helps…

Update: I double checked and when Metered Connection is grayed out, it is in non-admin mode. When in admin mode, metered connection is on.

It would seem on the surface, I am wrong; however 1803 Home updated KB4516058 (Sept Updates) with Metered Connection on, after failing KB4520008 (Oct Updates). This I can see in the Update History. Metered Connection is on, so Sept Updates should not have occurred.

Also 1903 Feature Updates also failed on 1803 Home.

The only way I will be able to prove Metered Connection was grayed out in admin mode, is with a picture.

Not sure how to set this discussion as resolve, until I have proof this is happening. Personally I think this occurred a few month ago too. Next time this happens, I will probably be on 1809.

      Thanks Everybody

      An Update:

I decided against trying the Registry Edit because based on some opinions expressed here. What I am going to try instead is Windows Update MiniTool from Susan Bradley’s article, https://www.askwoody.com/newsletter/peering-into-the-windows-tea-leaves/#windows-patching-0
