    * With standalone Office 2021 you won’t be shoved Microsoft Defender app against your will.

*With that price it’s too good to be real/legit.
If the key doesn’t activate you’re out the $$.

What they are selling is part of volume license from some unknown company.  Is this Microsoft “legal”?  No   Will Microsoft do anything about?  Maybe

    • #2537659

For any business, especially with disgruntled former employees, Microsoft audits are a real threat.

For a home user, with most shady sellers of Office your install will not be disabled (unless you try to reinstall after a crash or hardware upgrade).  If you are asked to install from other than official Microsoft links, that could lead to malware.  But consider if you need Office.  If you aren’t sharing or collaborating on files with other employees, the free options of Libreoffice, Google Docs, or Apple iWork web version are very effective.

Security patch support for one-time purchase versions of Office has been reduced to 5 years after initial product release.  https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/office-2021   If you end up using an outdated Office, I recommend disabling all Macros, using good antivirus software, and making full backups at least once a month.

The deal is for a Microsoft Office Pro 2021″Plus” license, which is a volume license. Is Microsoft allowing volume customers to sell off extra licenses?

        • #2538694

I don’t believe Microsoft is allowing it.
I think the sale is unauthorized by sellers that have “aquired” the licenses.

Except the software is provided by someone called Definitive Lab, who don’t seem to have a web presence. They turn up via “deals” on other people’s sites.

        cheers, Paul

I just got a copy of it and it activated with no problem. To redeem it you have to sign in to Microsoft and it installs from Microsoft in the same way all office installs are done.

I’m not sure I understand all the skepticism about this software since it actually installs from Microsoft and the key seems to be accepted. What are the dangers?

It seems that StackCommerce is the company behind the various “storefronts” that are offering these deals, such as the “deals” shops for neowin, ghacks, mashable, pcmag/stacksocial, techspot, Macworld, etc.

This MS Office deal seems to be offered  by “Definitive Lab” at each of these “stores”.

Edit: Just ran across this cautionary advice from Ed Bott:

“Welcome to the gray market. Do you feel lucky?”

BBB is no longer the organization it used to be.  You can have bots rate highly anything.

As Ed bott says “This outfit is selling “gray market” product keys that are harvested from a variety of sources and aren’t authorized for resale.”

I’ve said this over and over again and when it’s too good to be true IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

As Ed bott says “This outfit is selling “gray market” product keys that are harvested from a variety of sources and aren’t authorized for resale.”

As Ed admits “taking one for the team” and buying one of these product keys to see if it would work for him. And it did. But he also mentioned that he knows some folks that had used unauthorized keys that were deactivated some months later. So no guarantees of “lifetime”!

There is apparently no recourse if the keys eventually stop working, even if they initially activated OK in your Microsoft account. They may keep working, or they may not…

    • #2539691

I see what you mean about Ed’s article. Interesting knowledge for sure, but in my case I guess I will take the chance now that I have already bought and installed the software LOL. For the retail price of Office 2021 Pro Plus, I could buy 50 of these.

I had retail Office Home & Student 2013 which will run out of support soon so that’s why I jumped on this. Thanks for the links and advice to all.
