If you are still running Windows Media Center on either Windows 7 or 8.1 be careful. The monthly rollups break WMC. They contain a new ehtrace.dll file in C:\Windows\ehome. I get several error messages on Windows 7 (see attachment for example). Replacing the new ehtrace.dll file by the previous one apparently solves the issues (I will probably not do that because I do not want to mess with rights and take ownership. I hope that MS will solve this in the August updates). You can read more in this thread on TheGreenButton.

kb5002232 – shown on your spreadsheet as a office 2016  Excel security update.  I never received it and I can’t anything about it on the web.   Also some of the links  on the spreadsheet don’t work.

last month I had to forget the security update (and it then went away).

This month 5015814 and 5015882 went on easily with no probs.

Well until today never had a problem with Windows Update on my Dell XPS 13 9370. After updating today I no longer have my printer listed in settings. I had updated my other computer (Lenovo ThinkCentre M920q – refurbished) earlier without issue. Odd bit is if I attempt to print a pdf on the Dell, two printers appear in the list, The one labeled (Copy 1) works, the other does not. I’ve tried multiple restarts, including waiting a bit, and shutdown but nothing changes. Changed USB cable around to different sockets, nothing changes.

Both computers are up to date on Bios updates etc. and both are running W10 Pro 21H2, OS Build 19044.1826. There is a Feature Experience Pack difference: Dell is 120.2212.4180.0 vs Lenovo 120.2212.4170.0

I have no idea how to start to correct this and I believe it needs to be fixed or I’ll have more problems next month.

Thank you cyberSAR for the links showing MS admitting the problem. Wish I could have discovered this before updating.

MS offers some workarounds. They all involve removing printer from the Printers & scanners list. My list doesn’t show the printer. I had tried the power down, disconnect printer, wait, power up, connect printer sequence as well as moving to different USB ports without success. So I have the (Copy 1) variant visible when printing from an app, but not appearing in the P&S listing. I hope that will continue to function.

@pnshldn I wonder if another copy is ghosted in devmgr (show hidden devices and it’ll be shaded) just out of curiosity. BTW I never use the settings app when managing printers. I still go to control panel devices & printers. I have seen ghosts there that didn’t show up in the settings app.

Device Manager only shows HP LaserJet Professional P 1102w — no other printer.

Looking at Devices and Printers via Control panel does not show any physical printers: Fax, Microsoft Print to PDF, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, OneNote for Windows 10 and Quicken PDF Printer

The July 26 updates still cause the issues;

Microsoft has received reports of issues affecting some printing devices following installation of this update. Symptoms observed may include duplicate copies of printers installed on a device (commonly with a similar name and the suffix “Copy1”), and applications which refer to the printer by a specific name cannot print. Normal printer usage might be interrupted, resulting in failure of printing operations.

View the “Settings” app on your device. If a duplicate copy of a printer appears to exist under the “Bluetooth & devices” section, confirm whether this printer works. If so, this printer can be used normally, and other copies of the printer can be removed. If the issue persists, update the print driver for your device. For guidance, see Install the latest driver for your printer. If you are still having issues, uninstalling and reinstalling your printer should solve the issue. We are presently investigating a resolution and will provide an update when more information is available.

The issue started with the June 28 update (KB014666) and I assume will persist through subsequent cumulative updates until fixed.  Whether MS chooses to announce the patch or not remains to be seen.  It may just fall off the “known issues” list at some point.

I’m running Office 2013 on Windows 10 21H2 Home and have a quick question regarding the Access bug caused by KB5002121: can someone please clarify whether it is preferable to install this security patch despite the bug or whether we should skip it and wait for the fixed version? Thanks in advance.

Do you use Access?  If you don’t, I would install the security update.

Thanks Susan! I rarely use Access, most of my time using Office is spent with either Word or Excel, so I will go ahead and install this security update too.

The Win 10 21H2 preview was optional, but the .NET preview was NOT optional, so I had to install it.  I have no idea why Microsoft put this preview patch as required.

No printer issues even with a USB Brother Label Printer!

Internet Expolorer was not removed – still there.

BUT, I see two odd files in my temp folder: TS_DB1F.tmp and TS_DB4F.tmp. Seem to apply to Task Scheduler, but I see no changes in my task scheduler.

Any idea what these are? What changed in Task Scheduler?

Found what these tmp files did:

1. Ran Printer Cleanup Task – perhaps in response to the USB printer issue?
2. Ran Themes Synced Image Download. No idea why or what images I may have synced. Likely none

Installed MSRT v5.103 and the July CU KB5015807 yesterday. The latter however, instead of prompting a restart as usual after a period of time, said there was an error and to retry. I did several times to no avail. When I did reboot, I got the ‘configuring updates’ screen and after that it had apparently installed fine despite it still not showing up in ‘View update history’ in WU.

21H2 with .1826 build per winver so I know it has successfully installed. I even downloaded the standalone .msu installer from the MS Update Catalog just to make absolutely sure, and when trying to install said that KB5015807 was already installed.

It initially was logged as Failed under WU’s update history\Quality Updates, but now it doesn’t display at all so it would appear the last CU I installed was June’s. Not sure why, but aside from that there’s been no issues at all. As usual I’m abstaining from the July CU Preview (KB5015878).

I’m happy to report that the July update KB5015807 installed fine on Windows 10 21H1 Home (older DELL laptop), and didn’t affect printing with an ‘ancient’ Canon Pixma USB printer.

Just for kicks, before I tested printing, I looked at the printer settings to see if the extra Copy of the installed printer was there and it wasn’t. I had to restart the Print Spooler service, but everything was fine afterwards.

Feel lucky that my HPENVY 5549 still prints after July’22 update.  But scanning from my Dell W10 home v21H2 gives “device not found” despite uninstalling KB5015807.  Should I also uninstall Servicing -stack 10.0.19041.1790?

The Servicing Stack is the update for Windows Update itself. I does not affect the printer. And it cannot be uninstalled.

2022-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 for x64-based Systems (KB5015882) downloaded and installed without issue today.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

We were all once "Average Users". We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do to our systems, we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

Looks like there’s a typo in the latest Master Patch List under Office 2016. KB5002112 shows up twice; KB5002226 isn’t there at all. I’m not sure whether it’s recommended to install or defer either or both of these at this point.

For what it’s worth I’ve done plenty of in place upgrades from 2008R2/2012R2 to 2016 and 2012R2 to 2019 and had no issues. Just have to verify that the version of whatever software you’re running is compatible with the OS you’re moving to.

I see that MS has stated that KB5016616 cures the USB Printer missing problem. They are targeting build 19044.1889 for 21H2. I’m at 19044.1826 after July updates. Has anyone tried this to see if it actually fixes the problem. I am still sitting with only HP LaserJet Professional P 1102w (Copy 1) {which does work} showing in Printers and Scanners although a print combo box shows the non-Copy 1 version as well {which doesn’t work of course}. Device Manager shows a Print queue for the Copy 1 version but Printers only shows HP LaserJet Professional P 1102w. Going to DM>Printers>Properties>Events has a message:

Device USBPRINT\Hewlett-PackardHP_LaserJet_Professional_P_1102w\c&e4bf4de&1&USB002 requires further installation.

So what is the safest way out of this mess. The same updates to my other 21H2 Pro installation {Lenovo M920q vs Dell XPS 13 9370}  at the same OS Build did not have this problem.

I just realized that when I did July updates it is entirely possible that the printer was connected to the Lenovo. I use an A-B switch to connect the printer to the two different computers. Prior to July updates this had never caused a problem. A-B switch installed probably mid-May or possibly after June updates.
