• Nag to compress files (OE 6)

    All of a sudden when I close Outlook Express, I get this annoying NAG offering to compress files in OE.
    Anyone know how to get rid of this?

      Apparently, OE prompts for this every 100th time you close it in the XP SP2 version. This cannot be suppressed (except by manipulating the count), and since compacting the OE database is important, you shouldn’t. But there is a free addin OETool. Its toolbar has a button “Compact All Folders” that will also reset the counter to 0, so that the nag won’t appear.

        I ‘ve never seen this screen before this and I think I keep my OE files “lean and mean”. I never keep old emails except for a few that ARE important, such as order acknowledgements or ID numbers. Deleted emails are always emptied out, etc.
        I know that I’ve closed OE more than a few hundred times since SP2?

        WHY is compacting OE so important? I never gave it a thought before this.
        Besides, if it IS so important, why make it an option?

        I’m certainly not trying to come down on you about this, Hans. Just questioning the logic, if there is some logic behind this. confused scratch

        But, thanks much for that little utility. I’ll give it a shot.

          Outlook Express stores e-mails etc. in a database file. Like several other databases (MS Access is an example), it doesn’t automatically release the space taken up by deleted items. Reclaiming this space is called compacting, it improves performance and diminishes the chance of the database becoming corrupt.
          In the SP1 version, there was a feature to compact automatically in the background, but this was problematic. Therefore Microsoft switched to a prompt.

        I read your posting to viking on posting 592,819. I don’t use outlook express but i keeep getting those annoying pop ups every five minutes.I use hotmail very little with only a dozen or so messages ever received. please explain as i am not very computer educated.

          Are you sure the message comes from Outlook Express?

      I don’t use Outlook Express either but I do use Windows Live Mail. I get this screen popping up also. It’s definately more often than every 100 times I open or close the program. I just click Yes, and let it compress.

      I like Windows Live Mail but I keep having little problems with it.

      Every 4th or 5th time I open it, it won’t open. I have to go into Task Manager, find WLMail.exe and End Process. Then it will open just fine.
      I also occasionaly have a mail that I sent get stuck in the Outbox. I haven’t kept good track but I know some of them are just plain e-mails, no attachments or anything fancy. WLM tells me to open Hotmail and then send the item but there is no Outbox in Hotmail, so I can’t even find it. Multiple times opening and closing WLM doesn’t seem to help either, the mail is just stuck. What I have been doing is copying the text and composing a new e-mail in Hotmail.

      I am using Windows XP SP3. Thanks for any help you can offer.

        This sounds like you have Outlook or Outlook Express set as your default email client. To check/change this, Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, select Internet Options. Click Programs tab and select your email client from the drop-down list. Once selected, click OK/Apply button

        With WLM you can change the frequency of the automatic cleanup by going to Menus | Options | Advanced | Maintenance.

        I also used to see WLM occasionally not shut down completely and have to terminate WLMail.exe. But I haven’t seen that since I upgraded to the latest version (Version 2009 14.0.8064.0206). Do yo have the latest version?

This happens on both my work computer and my home computer. Could it have something to do with my sign on or account with Microsoft? I’ve had it for over 10 years, so it should still be good.

      I tried going back to Outlook, but I have to admit, I really like LiveMail better, except this little problem. Thanks for your help.

        I’m afraid I can’t help. I use Outlook 98% of the time at home & at work. I use WLM very little. Often when an e-mail client does not shut down it is because of a synchronization add-in.

        I’m afraid I’m out of suggestions as well. I don’t use WLM. As far as your MS account is concerned, I have an MSN account that still works just fine after 16 years. Try contacting MS support.
