The most current AskWoodyNewsletter has more details on the new Microsoft fonts applicable (or available to) the Office 365 only.    Peter Deegan states:

    Font substitution for Aptos

The Aptos fonts are available only to Microsoft 365 customers. No one else can get them, not even Office 2021 or Office 2019 licensees. Any documents, sheets, slides, or emails with Aptos fonts that are shared or sent won’t appear the same on other computers.

Strikes me that this is a fatal error for these fonts and this program (which, perhaps, most Office365 customers, not being that sophisticated, won’t notice and perhaps won’t care about).  Nevertheless, having things look the same is pretty critical for many people and applications.  Often (it seems to me) this will mean that text doesn’t line up, and documents will look crappy and ill formatted.

I would think that the most discerning users will edit the templates and go back to some other more universal font.  I certainly would (but I don’t use Office365 nor ever will).

If I understand correctly, Aptos is a renaming of an existing MS font called “Bierstadt”, which incidentally, is the name of a suburb of the German city of Wiesbaden and means “Beer City”.

It can be downloaded for free from numerous locations.

I just downloaded bierstadt.ttf and it installed just fine on my Win 7 machine and works like any other font in my Office 2003(!)

      I like Segoe UI better.

Does this suggest there would be value in downloading Bierstadt and renaming the font Aptos, by anyone that cared?  Can one rename fonts so that Windows is fooled appropriately?

But I’m sure that someone will make Aptos available sometime somewhere eventually.
