Connected my Canon 70D to Win 10 system and it was not recognized. windows says it doesn’t have a driver for the camera. If I go into Device manager the properties of the unknown camera device say no driver.

Canon doesn’t supply drivers because Microsoft does. Camera is detected fine in Win 7 and was detected by previous build of Win 10 on different hardware all with Microsoft drivers.

Hoping there are some photographers on here with win 10 and Canon cameras that don’t have this problem or had it and fixed it.

According to Canon for your model, you don’t need any drivers –

But have you considered Win 8/8.1 drivers to see if they will work –

Just a thought but have you tried hooking up the camera and opening Device Manager and see if you can get MS to search for it. I’m not on my W10 right now so not sure what shows up in your driver window, ie search for driver.
Or as Sudo15 said, try the 8/8.1 driver and see if you can update it through Dev. Mgr.

Don't take yourself so seriously, no one else does 🙂

Yes I’ve tried that. This is what I get.

Make sure your WiFi is set to disable, then try. I assume you are using USB port.

Looks like you posted here also http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4010446 and found no resolution other than trying a card reader or re-installing software. From what I gather on the other forum, your camera worked with your original upgrade to W10 but a subsequent update/upgrade caused the problem. There is another thread here http://community.usa.canon.com/t5/Software/EOS-Utility-not-working-with-Windows-10/td-p/147789 about pairing over Wi-Fi with the EOS utility that may be worth a try.

Is that EOS Utility 2.14.20a update in that link not a firmware update you could try – which was the one I had in mind.

Reading some of lumpy95’s link, that was mentioned as a possible fix.

No just an update to the EOS utility.

Don’t know if this helps but I have a Canon 60D from a few years ago. I didn’t install the software that came with it but if I plug in a Digital [USB] cable [no Wi-Fi on this model] it shows up in File Explorer’s Devices and drives as another drive [no drive letter assigned] and I can work with the images stored on the SDHC card in Canon EOS 60DSDDCIM100Canon. The 100Canon Folder numbers may change over time or with different models.

Are you using the USB cable that came with the camera? My camera (sorry, not a Canon) is not recognized using a standard USB cable, but is recognized using the cable that came with the camera. The camera USB cable has a thumb-sized wart near the mini end that evidently contains the hardware ID for the camera.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

I have been using the camera cable, but I don’t think that “thumb-sized wart” has anything to do with identifying the camera. I have a few cables with similar warts, I’ve used them interchangeably with no problems. I think that wart has some electrical circiutry, possibly a filter.

Mine uses just a Mini-B cable that comes with a number of devices, this is a page of examples:

I’m thinking about using Win 10’s built-in Reset/Keep my files option. hopefully that will repair whats broken with the camera not being recognized.

    • #1566291

You should always backup your system before attempting a reset. Note that you’ll have to re-install your desktop apps.

Backup done. Know about having to reinstall my programs. Making a list. I know Win 10 will, but I don’t trust Win 10. My camera isn’t the only issue I’m having.

OK I installed Win 10 on a spare drive. It detected my camera with no problem. Obviously something messed up on my win 10 upgrade.

      The question is What.

Considering Joe’s post (#20) you might consider swapping your old hard drive back into the computer and trying to uninstall the camera. (Did you make an image of the hard drive before you tried upgrading to Windows 10? That image would be handy right about now!)

Not sure what you mean by uninstall the camera. If you mean in device manager, then you haven’t read all of this thread.

Sorry. You said, “Obviously something messed up on my win 10 upgrade.” and I assumed (always a bad move, of course) that you’d upgraded Win7 or 8.1 to 10 and afterward the camera didn’t work.
I apologize for misunderstanding your post.

You are not wrong. I did upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10. And I apologize. I just checked my posts in this thread and nowhere did I mention uninstalling devices.

But I did go through the uninstall from device manager many times. Even hidden devices.

I suspect there was some issue (software) on my Win 7 that didn’t cause a problem with detecting the camera (driver already installed) but messed up Win 10.

    • #1566683

Perhaps there were still remnants from being plugged in with Win7. But the Win7 “stuff” was not compatible with Win10. In Win7 before the upgrade, you could’ve used Device Manager, displayed Hidden Devices, and uninstalled the camera. Or checked hidden devices in Win10 to see if you could uninstall it there before plugging it in.

There were no leftovers in Device manager from Windows 7. One of the first things I did was to check in device manager. Including showing hidden devices.

I kept the Win 10 install on my spare hard drive and reinstalled programs and copied files over from the other drive.

Camera is recognized and correct program is started. There is some other weirdness but that’s for another thread.
