I added a Text Box from the Insert tab on a worksheet.  Using the numeric keypad I was entering values into the text box – or so I thought.  When I looked at what I had entered, all the characters were on a single line.

The numeric pad Enter key was not “returning” me to a new line when pressed.  If I hit the Alpha keyboard Enter key a new line was generated.

I opened Word, inserted a Text Box, started entering characters, and each time the numeric pad Enter key was pushed a new line was seen.

I went to a co-worker and saw the same behavior on their machine where the numeric pad Enter key does nothing when working in a text box in Excel.

The numeric keypad works just fine on a worksheet.  I am old but don’t remember seeing this before.

      Hello notbrl,
I see the same behavior you noted using Office 2013. Based on an article from 2010, I believe this behavior may have started with Excel 2007.

I tested Excel 2002 and found the numeric Enter key does indeed do a carriage return within an inserted text box. You are remembering correctly how it used to work in Excel.

Thank you Sueska for your reply.  Apparently I haven’t been paying too much attention as this has been ongoing since Excel 2007.  🙂
