I’ve just tried to install the latest driver, 275/21, for my Geforce 8500GT card, on XPSP3.

The install went as usual, but after restarting, the PC crashed with a blue screen that flashed past so fast it was impossible to read.
I tried starting in safe mode – same result.

Fortunately I had an Acronis True image backup, which I restored.

I tried redownloading and reinstalling with the same result.

Has anyone else seen this problem, I’m sticking with the previous driver for now?

Does Windows update offer a driver as an optional install, if so what is the version number.

Well, I’ve certainly seen thay type of problem, though not this particular combination. XP Media Center edition was the most fickle when it came to updating video drivers (in my experience).

You might try the card manufacturer’s site to see if they have custom drivers, though at this point the card is a little on the legacy side of things.

IMO, Nvidia has a spotty record for driver updates. If you are not having any particular problem with your graphics card you should most likely leave the drivers alone.

I got the driver file from NVIDIA’s website, and it’s WHQL certified by MS.
I’ve asked NV about it, but knowing the tardy response they usually provide, I thought I’d try you guys first.
In the meantime I’m going down Joe’s track – leave it alone if it ain’t broke.

I haven’t checked the NVIDIA version that crashed on my Toshiba but I know many were used by Dell. It is a defective chip. Nothing is viewable on the monitor. It overheats. NVIDIA had Dell put out a “fix” to Dell owners that made the cooling fan run longer (like all the time). That extended the useable life past the warranty period. Good luck with NIVIDIA–customer service hangs up on you. Toshiba was good and sold me a card (with soldered in NVIDIA chip) so I could see my screen and transfer data. The chip is still defective but works for a year. Google it. The heat caused damage to computers and cost NVIDIA millions. Good luck. Hi,
I had the same problem with my XPSP3 with an older graphic card. A windows update showed up for it and I installed . Crashed my machine.
My card is a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200.
I just hid the update and try not to think about it too much.
