• Old Dell computer – hard disk problems

I converted this old laptop to ChromeOS, originally with Neverware now ChromeOS Flex.

The hard disk is having problems. I booted with WinPE to try and fix the disk but it doesn’t show up at all – no drive letter assigned.

Crosh storage_test_1 is running more than 24 hrs without completing.

What tool can I use (or boot from) to repair the hard disk and mark sectors bad?

    thanks

Problematic disks (bad sectors etc) mean the disk is about to die and needs to be replaced.

The most likely reason you can’t see the disk from WinPE is a lack of disk controller drivers.

Try booting from a Linux disk. If you can see the disk and files you can copy them to an external USB hard disk as a simple backup, then work on the problem disk.

      cheers, Paul
