OpenAI announced on Friday that four members of the company’s board had fired Altman – though it was phrased slightly more delicately.

The board of directors of OpenAI, Inc., the 501(c)(3) that acts as the overall governing body for all OpenAI activities, today announced that Sam Altman will depart as CEO and leave the board of directors…

At the same time, OpenAI chair Greg Brockman was stripped of his title, though asked to remain on the board. He was not informed of Altman’s dismissal until after it had happened – and resigned shortly afterwards. Other senior execs did the same…

Mira Murati, the company’s chief technology officer, will serve as interim CEO, effective immediately…

..the company announcing on Sunday evening that it had hired Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear as CEO. Or, rather, another “interim” CEO – making him the third chief exec in three days…

Both Altman and Brockman were then hired by Microsoft to work on AI initiatives, while the software giant says it continues to work with OpenAI…

Microsoft has assured us that there are positions for all OpenAl employees at this new subsidiary should we choose to join. We will take this step imminently, unless all current board members resign, and the board appoints two new lead independent directors, such as Bret Taylor and Will Hurd, and reinstates Sam Altman and Greg Brockman…

    * Microsoft which invested $13B in OpenAI hasn’t been notified about Altman’s firing and was furious and pushed for reinstates Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, a move which has failed.

OpenAI Staff Threaten to Quit Unless Board Resigns

More than 600 employees of OpenAI have signed a letter saying they may quit and join Sam Altman at Microsoft unless the startup’s board resigns and reappoints the ousted CEO…

New OpenAI CEO Emmett Shear says AI ‘doom’ risk ‘should cause you to s–t your pants’

Emmett Shear, the former Twitch CEO who was named the interim chief of OpenAI on Monday, has warned that artificial intelligence is “intrinsically dangerous” and poses such a threat of causing “doom” that it “should cause you to sh-t your pants.”..

Now, a resurfaced interview from June when Shear appeared on “The Logan Bartlett Show” revealed that the new OpenAI boss shares a similar outlook on AI as his predecessor, Altman, who has warned that the tech poses a “risk of extinction” to humanity on par with nuclear weapons and pandemics…

      My views on “doom”

I’m often asked: “what’s the probability of a really bad outcome from AI?”

There are many different versions of that question with different answers. In this post I’ll try to answer a bunch of versions of this question all in one place…

Sam Altman is still trying to return as OpenAI CEO

Altman’s move to Microsoft isn’t a done deal, and Ilya Sutskever’s flip to supporting Altman means two board members need to change their minds.

Sam Altman’s surprise move to Microsoft after his shock firing at OpenAI isn’t a done deal. He and co-founder Greg Brockman are still willing to return to OpenAI if the remaining board members who fired him step aside, multiple sources tell The Verge.

The promised mass exodus of virtually every OpenAI employee — including board member and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who led the initial move to depose Altman! — means that there is more pressure on the board than ever, with only two of the three remaining members needing to flip. Altman posted on X that “we are all going to work together some way or other,” which we are told is meant to indicate that the fight continues…

Microsoft prepares for influx of OpenAI employees

While negotiations between the OpenAI board and various factions continue, Microsoft has been readying office space and computing resources for an influx of OpenAI employees, Axios has learned…

A source familiar with the matter said Microsoft is setting up space in the San Francisco offices of LinkedIn, which are just a 10-minute drive from OpenAI’s main building in SF.

The company is readying work spaces, training clusters and Macs to ensure OpenAI’s workers can hit the ground running, the source said.
It also has legal and HR personnel at the ready to handle hiring and onboarding…

Sam Altman to return as CEO of OpenAI

After an attempted coup by OpenAI’s board that lasted five days, Altman is returning alongside co-founder Greg Brockman.

Sam Altman will return as CEO of OpenAI, overcoming an attempted boardroom coup that sent the company into chaos over the past several days. Former president Greg Brockman, who quit in protest of Altman’s firing, will return as well.

The company said in a statement late Tuesday that it has an “agreement in principle” for Altman to return alongside a new board composed of Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo. D’Angelo is a holdover from the previous board that initially fired Altman on Friday. He remains on this new board to give the previous board some representation, we’re told…

      “Satya Nadella

      @satyanadella
We are encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board. We believe this is a first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance. Sam, Greg, and I have talked and agreed they have a key role to play along with the OAI leadership team in ensuring OAI continues to thrive and build on its mission. We look forward to building on our strong partnership and delivering the value of this next generation of AI to our customers and partners.”
