Is there any way to set up an Outlook account so that you can send an email from the associated email address, but not check the server for incoming mail with POP3 (or IMAP)?

I have a longstanding couple of Yahoo email addresses, one of which has been my primary address for the past several years. It was originally set up so that my main email address would be ISP-independent. So I have a lot invested in the address, including numerous subscriptions.

The problem is that I would like to forward incoming emails from my Yahoo account to another (non-Yahoo) account, before downloading them into Outlook (this is a possible workaround to another problem which I have just posted here: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//144459-Outlook-times-out-connecting-to-Yahoo-via-POP3?p=841847#post841847). At the same time I would like to retain the ability to send emails from the Yahoo address via Outlook and SMTP.

When setting up the Yahoo account in Outlook 2010, you have to set up both POP3 (or IMAP) and SMTP — it does not seem possible to set up SMTP only.

Yet I have a feeling that some time ago I read somewhere that this was doable. There was a suggestion that you could set the POP server field to “DUMMY” but that didn’t work for me.

    Does anyone know how?

    Thanks in advance.

My system is Windows 7 Pro (x64) with Office 2010.

You must define the incoming and outgoing server, but then you can configure a specific account just to send or just to receive email. This is done in the Send / Receive Groups tab, then choosing Send / Receive Groups option (at the bottom of the Send & Receive group) – > Define Send / Receive Groups. You probably have a single group, so you can just click the Edit button. In the next screen, picking the account at the left column and uncheck Receive mail items.

This should allow you to just send email through the account. You will have to configure it normally, but then the receiving part won’t be used.

Set them both up to get the account working, then adjust the yahoo account to be in a group that never gets checked.

This is just what I was looking for. I will set it all up and test it later today and report back. Many thanks for all the help.

I have successfully tested setting up an Outlook account to send (SMTP) but not receive (POP3). Instead, the webmail account concerned is set to forward to another email address.

Thanks for showing me how to do this.

        Cheers,
        Pete.
