Susan Bradley Patch Lady
Hi Susan,
I am a bit confused. This morning I checked for updates using Windows Update and nothing showed up. I saw some articles on the web. Some say it is available via Win Update. Some say it is not.
The official link you provided says it is only available through the Microsoft Update Catalog.
I guess my question is, is this update supposed to show up in Windows Update?
Thanks so much!
That’s correct.
In fact, any non-security cumulative update that isn’t offered via Windows Update doesn’t apply to that particular PC. Don’t tempt fate by using the Update Catalog site to download and install a non-security cumulative update that wasn’t offered on Windows Update.
Next “security” cumulative update will most likely hit on June 12th. Regardless of when its offered, you should get it via Windows Update.
One used to be able to determine how current one’s patch level was by looking at the installed build number. Now that some cumulative updates aren’t offered by Windows Update if not applicable, we are left with multiple levels of “current.”
For example, evidently only 1803 users with Quickbooks have the higher build number but 1803 users without Quickbooks are still current but with a lower build number. One can no longer assess how up to date a PC’s Windows patching is through a quick inspection of build number.
I feel this is somewhat confusing but suppose we’ll get used to it. Nothing related to Microsoft patching surprises me anymore!
