I’m eagerly anticipating whether or not 1803 gets upgraded to 1903 or not, skipping 1809. Gregg Keizer posted an article on Computerworld this morning that claims just that, but I have not found any official answer. (https://www.computerworld.com/article/3396660/microsoft-orphans-windows-10-1809-prepares-to-jump-1803-users-straight-to-1903.html)

Note that if you download the 1903 ESDs thru Media Creation tool or download the 1903 ISOs directly from the Windows 10 download page, you’ll get build 18362.30 (the one released to MSDN users in mid-April 2019).

However, if you update to 1903 thru Windows Update, you’ll most likely get either the build 18362.113 or 18362.116 version

while this quote doesn’t directly say “upgraded to 1903”.. it seems more logical to see it as saying “1803ers/etc are going directly to 1903”:

The Windows 10 April 2018 Update (Windows 10, version 1803) will reach end of service on November 12, 2019 for Home and Pro editions. Starting this June, we will begin updating devices running the April 2018 Update, and earlier versions of Windows 10

I think the pace of 1803->1903 upgrades will pickup by the June patch day (June 11th) when people on 1803 will get the “Download and Install Now” option on the update, since a good portion of them who won’t be downloading KB4499183 to get D&IN before then.

So there’ll be a nice reasonable 3 weeks for everything to roll out before they crank up the upgrades. Remember that measurements seem to suggest that more people are on 1803 than 1809.

It seems more complicated then necessary to move 1803 people onto 1809 before moving them to 1903. They had months to move 1803 users to 1809 without 1903 and didn’t.

I installed 1903 on a desktop w/o touch screen monitor and started exploring.  In Action Center I clicked on “Compress”. I may have also activated night light, but suddenly the desktop was scrambled and the Start Menu was blown apart and windows controls (upper right corner) were there or not there and worked or didn’t work.  I thought the whole O/S had blown up.  I finally made it back to the Action Center and randomly clicked on “Expand” and suddenly the old familiar desktop appeared.  Then it all made sense, 1903 had thought my desktop was a touch screen tablet.  Makes no sense at all why “Compress” would completely scramble a desktop display and trash window controls.  And I managed to provide Microsoft feedback without any nasty expletives.  Hope you see this before clicking on the “link of death”.

WSUS also got a new product to cater for, next to “Windows 10”, there is also “Windows 10, version 1903 and later” (as well as two sets for drivers, just like for previous versions).

This contains Flash player updates, service stack updates and CUs for Win and .Net for 1903, so don’t forget to mark this if you want to support version 1903 in your environment.

The intention of this is to probably segregate sets of Windows 10 updates, similar to all previous Windows versions, so you’re able to ignore older updates for like 1703…

I upgraded last night and have had a little more time to play with it this morning. It did not offer me the update using check for updates so i used the update assistant.

As far as the installation itself it took about 2 hours so about normal for a feature update. No problems everything went fine and everything seems to work fine. The version is 18362.116 i assume that is the latest build.

As promised it now allows you to defer updates for 35 days so that should make a lot of WIN10 home users on this site very happy.

Other than that i didn’t see any major changes. It did allow me to uninstall some apps that you couldn’t before like xbox(yea!!!). I tried the light theme but did not like it.

If there is anything i missed or any other features you are interested in let me know and i will check it out.

Check my link to see what MS has promised to provide us in 1903 and now included in an update to 1803 and 1809.

Win10’s new “Download and install now” option — is it for version changes only, or will we get it for cumulative updates?

In both Home and Pro versions there should now be 2 separate Windows Update sections, one for Feature updates which will present themselves when available but which can be delayed until you are ready to select the “Download and install now” link, and a second section for Quality cumulative updates which can be delayed for up to 5 days, 7 times, max 35 days. The Check for Downloads button should now only apply to Cumulative updates and NOT pull down Feature updates any longer.

        Is this what you got?

I cannot verify that the feature update delay works. It is my understanding that the cumulative update released yesterday incorporates this feature in both 1803 and 1809  but i tried yesterday after installing the cumulative update on 1809 and i couldn’t get it to offer 1903 so i had to use the upgrade asssaint to go to 1903.

As you can see from the screen shot the ability to pause cumulative2019-05-22

updates is there. If you go into the advanced options it allows you to change it up to 35 days.

        Barry,

Perhaps since you are already updated to v1903 there is no need for MS to show the separate Feature Update availability or the “Download and install now” link until the next Feature comes along? (If true, those installing the recent 1803 and 1809 update should show or eventually show that Feature 1903 is available to “Download and install now” – yes?)

Are you using Windows 10 Home or Pro?
If Pro, do you still have the Advanced setting to delay Feature updates up to 365 days?
If Pro, do you still have the Advanced setting to delay Quality Updates for X days before they appear for downloading? (This is/was separate and apart from Pausing the Updates once they did appear).
Is the Group Policy setting that makes Windows Update advise of updates but requires approval before downloading (setting 2) still available?

Decided to be a bit of a ‘thrillseeker’ and downloaded the 1903 ISO and did a clean install on my main PC today, Windows 10 Professional.

Everything seems to be working well so far after installing most of my programs. Not sure if I really like the lighter blue default wallpaper but it is easily changed.

One thing I’ve noticed is that the Apps link under Windows Settings (Start > Settings > Apps) tends to crash back to the desktop quite regularly – just did it twice now while I tested it as I type this post then it opened properly on the third and fourth try.

Apparently, MS is aware of the issue and is hopefully working on a fix. There are also a couple of Reddit threads about it:

Windows 1903 update apps and features crash from Windows10

Clicking on "Apps" in Settings causes the entire Settings app to crash and disappear in 1903 from Windows10

Apart from that, I’m happy with 1903 so far (I still have 1809 on the other SSD in case something serious breaks with 1903).

In this article, Microsoft to start pushing Windows 10 version 1903 automatic updates within weeks, there is a pretty good explanation of the revised Windows Update.

There are still automatic updates. You only get to decide on an install for the feature updates. For cumulative updates, you may defer one week at a time for five weeks. Feature updates will be automatically installed if you are running a Win10 version that is relatively close to being unsupported. If you don’t like any of this you’ll have to revert to whatever means you have been using to defer updates.

        Hmmmmm.
Then 6 months away in an 18-month cycle is “relatively close”?
Because MS says it’s going to start forcing the upgrade in June, probably in spite of your settings, if history serves.

No telling how quickly that will happen. I read that to say they will start 6 months ahead. We’ll have to see if they take a measured approach to this or not.

So here’s what might be a silly question and perhaps it’s already been answered here but missed by me…

Now that MS has released 1903, does anyone know where I can download the MediaCreationTool-1809.exe or some .exe or image that I can use to build a bootable USB drive with 1809 on it.

      Thanks,

Look for Media Creation Tool, you can google it. It is available on MS web (for example czech version https://www.microsoft.com/cs-cz/software-download/windows10), or some filesharing servers like HeiDoc.net, as Ally wrote. You can download all versions from the list, I install updates with these ISO files. You can skip any number of versions and user data will still remain (foe example update from 1609 to 1809 in one step, which is useful). Also, windows remain licensed. Good luck!

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

      Hmm…

I know that Woody mentioned downloading W10 1809 before 1903 was released… and timing does matter…

But… in this case, you might be successful by going to HeiDoc and using their Windows and Office ISO download tool.

This is INFURIATING. Platform drivers on Lenovo Yoga tablet AGAIN. I had hoped updating instead of clean install would be enough, but not – here we go again… Platform drivers do not get re-installed, so you have to take the OTG cable, connect the keyboard and mouse to the tablet and install everything from scratch… WILL THEY EVER LEARN?!

It is the same thing with EVERY single feature update since the very beginning. Half a year of waiting wouldn’t change a thing. And this is my “fun tablet”, so where should I test new versions if not there?

      Hey Y’all,

After “seeking” for 3 days with no love I finally went to the Microsoft Upgrade Assistant and downloaded Windows10Upgrade9252.exe. Strangely this came into my downloads folder with a (1) appended. Sure enough there was an older version of the same program that I used for the last update to 1809. Just for kicks I tried the older one and it didn’t do a thing but tell me thanks for upgrading. Then I tried the new one and about 2 hours I was running Build 18362.19h1_release 190318-1202.

Strangely enough I got this message:20190523_1601041
So I dismissed the message and sure enough Classic Shell was still there and running. Reboot and the message appeared again with the same results. So I uninstalled Classic Shell and loaded Open Shell (it’s replacement) and all is well. Everything seems to be working OK so far. 😎
