6)      If you still can’t sign in, try creating a new local administrator account, log in to that new account, then follow the steps in Fix a corrupted user profile to copy your personal data from the old profile into the newly created one.

Repair instructions are: create a new profile, populate it with old profile data, and reinstall software. This process is time-consuming and rather intense. In the absence of further information, there are no measures to prevent this “profile corruption” occurrence with future updates.

Wouldn’t it be… breathtaking… if Windows Defender also participated in the race condition?

I don’t pretend to understand Windows update installers, but from my Computer Science days, it was relatively difficult to diagnose a potential race condition, but relatively easy to fix one, if you could let the stomped-on main process go idle for a considerable length of time.
