Currently running Windows Pro v1803 wanting to move to v1903 – seems timing is as good as it’ll get before the December updates arrive.

Current Settings: Semi-Annual Channel, Feature deferral 365 days, Updates deferral 0 days, wushowhide, Group Policy – 2 notify before download.  v1803 current thru October.

Feature update to 1903 via the Windows Updater by changing Feature deferral to 12 days or less.  (1909 released on 11/12/19)

After 1903 appears in Updater, allow download and install.

Before allowing reboot, disconnect from internet

Reboot, allow installation to complete, then review/change settings before reconnecting to the internet

      Questions:

Reboot for 2nd time after reconnecting to the internet, or will Windows automatically restore the wired LAN connections to the internet?

Believe I am looking for Build 18362.476 which is inclusive of KB4524570 which contains the fix for the Windows Updater Advanced settings wherein I can once again change Feature and CU settings without them disappearing – correct?

      KB4524570 also contains un-activated software for v1909?

How do I handle the settings situation if the Updater installs the earlier build 18362.449? Use Group Policy to change settings? Or will this build immediately offer a CU to KB4524570? Or, the “download and install” link option to 1909?

I assume the necessary Servicing Stack(s) will automatically be installed with any Feature updates – correct?

      Anything else to consider?

If you set the Feature deferral to 12 days or less you will get 1909. I would suggest somewhere between 100 and 200 days for 1903.

If you are using wired connections, the computer will automatically connect when you connect the wire.

Believe I am looking for Build 18362.476

Build 18362.476 has the pulldown deferral settings in the GUI that do not disappear. That is the current 1903 Build. That Build also contains the deactivated features of 1909.The Servicing Stack will be automatically installed.

        PK thanks!

Looks like I have a plan.

        One other Question:

Since the v1903 install will be build 18362.476, if I leave the pulldown deferral settings in the GUI that do not disappear set to 0, will I quickly receive the “download and install” Feature update link offering v1909 which I can utilize or ignore for as long as I like? (similar to you, I have never seen this link appear within my v1803).

Or should I set the GUI deferal days back to Feature = 365 and CUpdates = 0 to be sure I dont get forced to v1909 until I am ready?

I left the GUI settings as is. You can choose 1909 whenever you get ready – you probably won’t get the “download and install” with 365 days. But you can change that whenever.

Before allowing reboot, disconnect from internet

What is the purpose of disconnection from the Internet in an upgrade process ?

        Here’s two reasons:
MS adds features, turned on by default, that you may not want.
MS still changes some of your settings that you may want to change back.

Earlier today I reset my Feature deferral to 100 days.  A couple of hours ago Windows Updater advises Updates available – Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903.  Status:Pending download.

I’m now awaiting Woody to finish posting his recently announced Computerworld article before proceeding.

Selected the Download button to allow install of 1903 on 11/26/19.  Complete process took a little over 1 hour on my system. Checked all settings etc, and rebooted.  After restart, checked items again then plugged back into the internet.  Several .NET updates, MSRT, and Adobe updates received. No problems noted as of today.

        So far all seems fine!

Now that was interesting advice. I followed it as I just upgraded 1809 Pro x64 to 1903 Pro x64 (which took almost 3 hours but seems to have gone quite well) and for the first time my defaults for pics, music files, etc weren’t reset!

Those aren’t the only settings on your computer.

True, of course, but it’s less things to have to go back and check. Every little bit helps!
